Muscle tearing; weight gain?

Hey everyone! I have a question... I started working out about a week ago and boy o' boy do I feel the burn. It's a good kinda pain though. Since working out I have gained three pounds! :0 It's so discouraging so I decided to do a bit of research on this topic. Apparently when you exercise your muscles get microscopic tears that grow back with stronger tissues (?) While the muscle is torn, during the healing process, it apparently retains water. So my question is, because of my muscles being torn from working out, is it possible that these three pounds I've gained is due to water retention? If so, how long does it take for this extra weight to come off? I know I sound ridiculous, but honestly, it's a bit discouraging.....
I also just signed up for Netflix and ordered the 30 day Shred DVD and I'm going to start that program. I've read other threads that say weight gain is common in the first two weeks of starting the program.
I'm just concerned..... Is this normal, and when should I expect to see the weight on the scale go down rather then up while doing intense workouts?
Thanks!

By building muscle you can GAIN weight while losing body fat.
Muscle is denser than fat so 1lb of muscle fits in a smaller space than 1lb of fat. This is how you can drop clothes sizes and still get heavier.
Stop worrying about weight. You need to start now using your body fat % as your measuring stick.
