Underactive Thyroid and losing weight ..

Options
I have an underactive thyroid, medication has me "within range" now. Unfortunately ive put on 3.5 stone and still feel lethargic and putting on weight. Is anyone else trying to lose weight with an underactive thyroid?

HI! you're not alone buddy!! I was diagnosed about a year and a half ago. I had gained about 30lbs and as i kept taking my meds, slowly but surely lost that weight without any workout. Recently i've gained back that 30 lbs, my thyroid level is with in range as well, but i'm working hard to shed this weight. My doctor said that it's going to take me twice as long and hard to loose the weight compared to a person w/o thyroid problem.
I'm fairly new to MFP and to be honest with you haven't lost any weight, but i'm not giving up! and YOU SHOULD'NT EITHER!! keep at it!! Start doing daily workouts, no matter how hard you think it is..you have to push yourself to see results!! It's not easy for us but we can do it!!

Eighteen years ago I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. Well you could say specialist don't know everything. They killed too much of it and now I am underactive. I also was told the same thing about it being harder to lose weight. I have lost many different times and always gained it back. I have been on this for 4 days and lost 4 pounds. I am hoping this will help me to eat healthy for life not just to lose weight and turn around and gain it back.

Lets work on this together. Feel free to add me as a friend.

Hey all, don't give up! I lost 23 lbs. on MFP in a little more than a year and a half (took about 8 months to lose and I've been maintaining for a year now within a 3 lb. range). I only have a third of my thryoid and take meds to keep me in a normal range. It is possible. You just have to be diligent with your food intake and logging and get your exercise in. It will take a little longer but that also gives you time to really get the hang of eating healthy so it stays off. Good luck!

Yes, but i HATE taking medicine...

I heard L-Tyrosine is supposed to help boost thyroid activity so I am trying that before I get back on the meds. Currently on 1000 mg a day but I'll probably be bumping it up to 2000 this weekend. I'll let you know if I notice any improvement

I've also been recently diagnosed with (what I think is a mild case of) hypothyroidism. Doc put me on 25mg of Synthroid and my levels are supposed to be normal now but she upped the dosage to 50 anyway... not sure what that means! They haven't helped with weight loss, but I am definitely seeing slight improvements in other areas like not being cold all the time and slightly more energetic than usual. But that could be the weather warming up too :)

Anyway, solidarity for us underactive thyroid carriers :D

Thanks a lot for that link! I also have hypothyroidism. I think I would be a lot heavier if I wasn't on the medication for it, but the weight is still hard to lose overall even though my TSH says I'm in range too... good luck and don't let it slow you down.

I too have an under active thyroid. I've been on medication & within "normal range" for 3 years now, but still am not back down to my pre-thyroid issues weight. I am by no means overweight but still feel like a "fat" me...
