How often do you try to get yourself out of your comfort zone.. We go to the gym day after day and do somewhat the same routine.
I just wonder how many people actually get out there and choose to feel the pain , break through the next barrier , do what others will not do so that you can get to the next level !!! what are your success stories or tricks you use to get you though. how do you break the cycle?

I only really break out of my comfort zone when my routine becomes too boring. Eventually curiosity will overwhelm me and I'll try out a new machine or technique out at the gym, even if I look like a goof or don't know what the hell I'm doing.0

I usually go to one of the fitness pros and ask them for ideas to revamp my workouts. I also watch my heart rate and try to get it up to 155-165. If it's not getting high enough by doing what I've been doing, I'll increase the resistance on the cardio machines or start moving faster.
My goal right now is to be fit enough to handle keeping up with the "boot camp" classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Hoping to be there by the end of the summer.0 -

what i do is boost up the level on the bike or elliptical to a point where i can only push it for a min to 2 min until my body says enough and then go back to a normal level , at least this gets my heart rate up and gives me a great sweat and burn! awesome interval training.. a must try0 -
Fortunately, I subscribe to a computerized program that forces me out of my zone on a consistent basis. I also have a 'mentor' at the gym that pushes me just a tad bit more than I believe I can do. So between the two, I am pretty much in pain most of the time. I joke to my friend that every time I see him walk across the gym towards me, my muscles start to spasm.0

I try something new once a week, my new thing is the insanity workouts or 90 day supreme. I get a great burn and it changes it up. I think I will look for Zumba on demand to do at home.0

excellent idea.. I actaully started mty own boot camp class , this really motivates me to try an stay ahead of the class , makes me train even harder! (great job!)0 -
As far as pushing myself out of my comfort zone in familiar exercises, I try to avoid doing that. I've had too many injuries from doing that. I just gradually widen my comfort zone when it comes to running, weights, etc. as it becomes easier for me over time. For instance, I never would have been able to complete twenty-five minutes on the elliptical a couple of weeks ago, but now I'm able to get through thirty after a bit of perseverance.0

I like the assumption that just because you're doing the "same thing" you're not pushing yourself. If I'm doing the same lifts, I can't be increasing the weight. If I'm using the same machine, I can't be consistently doing intervals, increasing time, increasing intensity, etc. to push myself to my limits.0 -
I attend classes at my gym that force me out of my comfort zone. Step class, kickboxing, aerobics and many more. I don't want to slack in front of everyone else so I push myself harder and of course the instructor has moves in their routines I wouldn't do outside of class so it's a win win for me!0

try some interval training , i feel like if i just push out the minute or 2 there is a bit of relief afterwards.. awesome job ,YOU CAN DO IT!0 -
I don't go to a gym, but when I go to the track to walk, I try to add a few jogging intervals in between. For me, that's out of my comfort zone - I love walking, but do not enjoy running at all. It's not so bad in the beginning, but by the last interval, it reminds me of that scene in "Poltergeist" where JoBeth Williams is running down the hallway and it just.keeps.stretching out! :grumble:
I keep trying to remember that I actually feel -good- afterwards, to keep me motivated to do it again the next time.0 -
LOL. I am in that situation now. I've been giong to the gym every day..well M-F..comes free with the job..*bonus*! But that was also the day I got my van so I was able to get up get the kids and get out to be able to get a good hour or almost an hour. I do the eliptical and the treadmil (walk/jog). Now 2 months later my van...broke..now. I'm changing it up a bit. I walk my kids a couple blocks away to meet my awesome day car provider and then I put in my ear buds and jam on walking to the bus stop...3 stops passed my original stop, just to add that umph I guess..but today...TODAY as I was walking I turned around and saw the dang bus...I was like OMG...can I make it if I run?? I'm sure I let out a huge sigh and told myself this is what I have been doing for the past couple months...I should be able to run that short distance to most...but when you have 140+lbs to lose...it's daunting..but I said c'mon girl and next thing I know...I'm running to that bus stop and I was like omg I'm doing it...(i'm not one to run, especially on a busy street to a crowded bus stop) but I did and that to me was taking me out of my comfort zone. I also started picking destinations and just walking to them with my kids...just to walk and before I knew it I was adding in that on the weekends so now I"m up to 6-7 days of activity. I've been obese all my life and was alwasy worried about what the next person is going to think. I'm almost to the point that I don't care...because I'm doing this for me and for my health and no one can take that away from me. So little by little....I push myself and by push myself I mean I try to get my maximum heart rate and keep it there until I'm super fatigued and then come down from it. Today my knee has been just aching...when I get up from my chair at work...I'm like OUCH! But once I start moving again...the pain subsides and I'm just grateful it does...baby steps, ya know. My overall feeling is just so much better being more active...i can't even stress that enough. Find different things to do...it could be as difficult as running 3 min straight or doing as many sit ups as you can in a minute...You gotta start somewhere, right. Building up my endurance has been extremely empowering...extremely.
I'm done babbling now.. :laugh:0 -
Yep EXACTLY! :drinker:0

i feel if i am doing the same reps same weight or walking runing the same mile , my body will get used to it and never grow or get much more benefit from it.. from pushing i am making progress , just wondering how other people push themselves to the max0 -
I know exactly what you mean!! I've wanted to the the C25K thing but I just don't get it...may look into it again! :noway:0

I've only relied on my own developed lifting routine for some time. I didn't want to do the hard stuff like squats, deadlifts, etc. Finally, after reading all the benefits, I incorporated these lifts into my workouts and have since switched to StrongLifts 5x5. I'm motivated to beat my last goal and look forward to doing those lifts now.0

I signed up to run a 5k in April and MayGives me something to look forward to. I have much to improve on -- stamina, breathing... but I have made great strides!! Would love to start with a 5k and continue working my way up
