Total daily water intake. Do you include tea/coffee/other dr

Just curious. I've read that tea/coffee/diet coke are diuretic so don't really count towards the 2ltrs recommended, but I've ALSO read that the diuretic effect is minimal and so DO count. I only have 1 coffee in the morning and 1 tea in the afternoon, and DON'T count them.
I've ALSO read that it's not really necessary to drink 2l of water a day, but I try to because it means I eat less and also because I live in a very hot country.
What do you do?

I've heard that as long as there is no caffeine in your tea or coffee, it can count towards your water intake...

I don't count anything other than pure water in my intake. That's not all I drink, but that's all I use the handy little water glass in my diary for!

I don't typically count my coffee or tea intake to my daily water intake however you most certainly can. It also doesn't matter if there's caffeine in the coffee or tea. Water is water is water and it doesn't matter what form it's in.

    To me, "water" means water.

I find that I don't always need to drink 8 glasses a day.

Actually, it might matter, because caffeine (or maybe it's coffee) has a diuretic effect. So you would need to drink water to make up for it.

That's why I ask. A chiropractor once told me that I shouldn't count tea, coffee or diet drinks like Coke zero towards my total water intake. HOWEVER, since then I've read online that this isn't strictly true as the diuretic effect is minimal compared to the actual content of water of these drinks.
I have to admit that since upping my water intake, I don't have the same back pains I used to have.

    BAHAHA!

I always count my tea. I drink SO MUCH green tea that if I didn't count it I would have TOO MUCH water intake. I do try to drink plain water too, or with a little lemon juice in it. I always count my honey/milk that I put in my tea into my caloric intake though. I don't count my coffee, although my doctor says I can count it. The amount of diuretic in it isn't substantial enough to nulify the amount of h20 that is in it.

not if you drink enough water....
  • i have also heard that for water it should be half of your weight in ounces that you should consume not the standard 8-8oz glasses. for example i weigh 150lbs so i get in at least 75oz of water everyday.

OK, that seems a bit much, maybe if you a professional athlete. Otherwise you'd never be able to leave the house!, in the loo all the time!!

There's a lot of debate about this however I have recently read that it's not true and that you can count it towards your daily water intake.

    It matters a whole lot!!!!!!

Actually, caffeine TAKES water away from your body. So while you think you might be getting 8 oz of water in your caffeinated coffee, you are actually taking water out of your body!

I drink other things throughout the day, but still try to get 8 glasses of water on top of that. If I drink only pop/tea, I end up retaining water.

Monster where are you with your links?!

Water is water. But other liquids hydrate you too. I count coffee, tea, and some other thigns into my daily water intake. I count it more as "fluid" goal to keep hydrated.
  • I personally only count plain water. No coffee, tea, ect.

I count my iced tea and lemonade towards my water intake. Don't drink coffee and rarely drink sodas. I do try and make sure that at least 1/2 my fluid intake is just plain water.
