Currently play men's league 1-2 times a week (lately its been once a week), just wanted to see if there are any other players out there and how the heck you log calorie burn.
I wore my HRM for 2 games and it showed over a thousand calories over the course of the game where mfp only has 400 for the same 30 min of ice time.. I use what mfp shows but I am skeptical to say the least

I always log what MFP says.. which is i think 391 for 30 mins? i definelty feel like i burn way more than that though!0
-
I agree, I think the true number lies somewhere in the middle. I log what mfp says and everytime I say the same thing.. "that just doesn't seem right" lol0
-
I usually log between 20-40 minutes depending on how much I play and go with what MFP says. The number always seems kind of low to me but I figure its better to underestimate calories than overestimate them. It's good that you have a heart monitor, though >1000 does seem like a lot.0

I wore my HRM a few times, and just logged what that said. I didn't wear it every time though because it got annoying. Just once or twice to see if it was consistent.0

What type of HRM do y'all use. I am looking for one for when I do Karate and working out. But I don't know much about them.
Any ideas would be great!0 -

i play roller hockey (inline). i wore an hmr a few times, but i paused it when i was not out on the floor. i believe that made it more accurate. i am pretty little and mine was over 500 calories for about 40 minutes.0 -
I'd love to play hockey, but there aren't any coed rec leagues for adults in my area. I play broomball and typically burn @ 200 calories for 2 20-minute periods.0

I play ringette and use what's on MFP only because I don't have a HRM. If I were you, I would definitely use the HRM results since I know how much of a workout a good game can be.0

I love that all the hockey players responding are women! :flowerforyou:
If only I could skate!!!!!!0 -
Big hockey fan here. I have always wondered how many calories the skaters burn. The strength and conditioning needed to participate is impressive so congrats for continuing to play into your adult years! My favorite is college hockey (Go MN Gophers), and in their games I can believe 1000 calories is no exaggeration.0

With the pace they push through the entire game, they definitely burn more then we would in recreational leagues :laugh:0 -

I never go ice skating either! So weird!0 -
Have a game tonight.. I made some modifications to my HRM, so I think I will try it again and see what it says this time..0

I only wore my HRM twice, because I found that it was annoying under all my equipment. I also had a reading of over a thousand. It didn't seem right to me, so I met it somewhere in the middle and recorded it as about 700-800 calories burned.
Apparently I already commented in here - weird!0 -
When I lived around an ice arena and was able to play several times a week, I would wear my Polar HRM every time I played. Yes, I believe I do burn that much (depending on how hard I played and what type of players I play against). Just remember, MFP has no way of knowing how many shifts you play, what your heart rate is, etc. If you have your correct height, weight, age logged into your HRM, then it will show you closer to how much you are burning based on their formula....but if you are concerned it is too much, then tyou can always ake an average of what you have on your HRM and what the MFP tells you..I can tell you that when I play for fun with my friends for 80+ minutes, I burn close to 900 calories...and my body feels every single one of them the next day:-)0

Ummmm, am I Canadian? Yesssss!! Mostly road hockey with my kids!! And how many calories do I burn? Who knows, a heck of a lot though, I am sure!! I know that doesn't help lol!0
-
I do play also and just add in what MFP has listed I am sure I burn more then that but better to be under then over . I definitely like my hockey days it give me a break from the gym and i am sure I am burning more than my gym days which are anywhere from 1400 - 1800 calories burned just in cardio. When the puck drops it all out every shift an I usually play for two hours0

i just type in hockey and put in the time. It gives me around 1100 cal and that is in line with what my HRM used to tell me a few years ago when I wore one.0
-
I wore my HRM for a few games and got right around 1000 calories burned, so I went with that.0

Hockey is a giant interval trainer. I got strong legs (soccer since I was little) and i go out there for 60-90 seconds per shift, some nights with two lines of defense-men, some nights with only 3, (so im out on average 2 min for every 1 min rest). A few years ago I wore a HRM (Polar) for a couple seasons and it was cool downloading the graph of my heart rate. I had 100% spikes on every shift (220 - age), and thats how I play hockey, ALL OUT, when I get off after 90 sec I HAVE to get off, my legs are noodles. By the third period the gear weighs twice as much since you sweat so much, and thats extra challenge. I've done a great many things, but nothing comes close to the workout I get at hockey.. maybe kickboxing a little bit when I get into a good rhythm.
The body heats up, adrelanine flows, I literally don't feel any pain in that zone which is how I tore my bicep tendon on a slapshot that a defender skated into my follow-through, kept playing and scored two goals in that game--a rarity as a defenseman.
I miss the feeling just writing about it.. good thing I got a playoffs weekend tournament coming up with a brutal 4 games in 3 days. (Brutal when you usually play once a week).
I have yet to meet any hockey player who doesn't absolutely love playing hockey.0 -
I've worn my HRM while refereeing games several times. I always pause while the ice is being cleaned between periods. I normally get somewhere between 600-700 an hour. It depends on the level of the game. I haven't worn it while playing yet, mainly because I play goal and am worried that one well placed shot could break the chest strap.0

I love hockey. Play over an hour every few weeks as a reward to myself. I have always leaned to the conservative side with my calories burned, except with excercise that is continuous, like cardio and videos, for those i use the Polar FT7 and use its calories. Also as one guy said in another thread the HRM does not reduce calorie burn by the ammount you would use anyway, say 100 Calories/hour. That said Hockey is on and off the ice, with several breaks for water. So I have been going with the MFP suggested calorie count. This has allowed me to beat the programs assumed weight loss for me for the last two months. It also helps me be more accountable to myself for the calories I take in to my mouth as well.0

I try to wear my HRM pretty regularly while playing hockey. Tend to get a read out of 550-750 per game depending on how many lines we have out there + what position I'm playing. That includes warm up and a bit of cool down, so maybe an hour or so of calculating.0
