Does anyone do this? Is it a good idea or bad idea? I usually have left over cals each day....But I've heard a lot of people will sort of carry them over for a few days or even throughout the week....

I usually borrow calorie credits and hope I can pay them back later in the week.0

I calorie cycle, so essentially this is what I do. It only works if you really hit highs, lows and average days though. I just make sure that my weekly net calories averages out to my goal.0

I do this... But I only do it for a week. Every Thursday (my weigh in day) I start fresh. My goal is always to break even by the end of the week or be pretty close. It seems to work well for me!0 -
I kind of do this, I tend to be a bit low during the week (when I'm better at planning my meals ahead of time) and high during the weekend. It's been working out for me - it evens out over the course of the week so that I'm hitting my calorie goals overall and I've been losing consistently!0
-
I do not do this and only because I used to do this type of thing when I was on WW and it didn't work for me.0
-
I might have to start doing this...I'm pretty awful on my days off...if I can have enough left over calories during the week to make up for a couple of high days (and a bit more self control on those days) I might actually be able to feel good about my choices.0

Weight watchers has a similar weekly bonus, {so to speak} . I forget how many, but you get a weekly allowance to use at your discretion. You can evenly distribute on a daily basis, or wait and use them for a special occasion. But they are gone on day seven. You were not able to continue to bank them, indefinitely. It worked for many people. I rarely used them.0
-
I don't bank calories at all, but if I know I am going out to dinner I eat lighter for breakfast & lunch and/or get a good workout in so I have something extra to work with for the planned meal.0
-
I'll do it over a 2 day period only. If I haven't made them up or exercised extras off in the day that follows, then I just forget about it and carry on.0
-
I pay attention to my weekly totals, not daily. Who can eat the same amount every day?0

Banking calories? Cmon, you know theres no such thing! thats like saying im not gonna eat ANYTHING with FAT in it from Monday thru Saturday, but then on SUNDAY im gonna eat 2 boxes of pizza cause I earned that fat...really? Your body does not work this way (banking). It burns through what you put into it as it receives it, so if you overload it 1 day, it will 'store' the excess that it is not used to. Thus the reason why we have all gained weight to begin with, cause we ate too much, simple! I dont mean to be rude, but consider how we all got here in the first place was from TOO MUCH BANKING, EVERYDAY. Just saying.0

Funny...I don't remember saying that.0 -

That's not true. Your body works on a 5-10 day cycle. Just because you eat too much today doesn't mean it's all going to turn into fat. It's the weekly average that's important not the daily.
Of course, with that said, it's not healthy to only eat 1000 calories today and then 3000 tomorrow. But, keeping a couple hundred extra today to eat tomorrow isn't going to hurt you.0 -

I didnt say that YOU said that. I was giving you an example luke. I understood what you mean by carrying over calories. but consider the things that happen within our bodies when we eat. Over eating one day because you ate less the day before is not the best approach. Again..im just saying....everyone is free to experiment. just an Opinion guys/gals. :-)0 -

So what you are saying is that if I have 6 days in a week with 200 cals left over and then 1 day where I overeat by say 500 calories that's going to be detrimental to the my weight loss? Seems to me that I'd still have a deficit of 700 cals for the week.0 -
I do sometimes. I don't do it every week, but if I'm at a deficit for several days, I don't feel as bad if I splurge on a dinner out0

The way it worked in the old WW system was that you'd get a daily amount of points based on your BMI (for me it was 22) and everyone had the same weekly bank of points (35) and you could add any points earned exercising. The weekly bank reset on your weigh-in day. The old WW had a formula that calculated points based on calories, fat and fiber only. This *roughly* came out to about 60 calories per point, depending on the fat/fiber content.
So my daily point were about 1,320 plus whatever I earned from exercise (every 100 calories burned was about 1 point) and you could use the weekly points however - a few every day or all on the weekend. I find this quite similar to the calories values MFP is giving me - about 1300 per day, plus exercise calories. The difference is that MFP does not give you a "bank" of 2,100 extra points. On the other hand, WW would not give you credit for exercise calories burned for everything you did - it had to be at least 10 minutes of intense or 20 minutes of moderate exercise to earn you a point.
I did lose weight this way, but I don't like the new WW system so I quit and moved over here. Based on my experience, I would say that you can certainly bank and still lose weight, as long as you do the math and keep writing everything down. And I imagine most people have to do this to a degree - otherwise how to you balance between eating at home and going out, or not drinking on some nights and having a glass of wine on others? But you'll just have to test it for yourself for a couple of weeks and see if it works for you.0 -
It's personal preference. I try not to carry anything over but it does happen sometimes (usually on the weekend or post hockey when I go to the bar with friends). MFP sets daily goals to reach weekly targets. As long as the weekly net total equals then you will realize your goals.
It's your choice though. Also varying you caloric intake is not a bad idea. Keeps the body guessing and prevents your metablosim from adjusting down.0 -
I keep a spreadsheet of calories burned vs. calories consumed. I have a column that added the total of calories EARNED but not consumed so that on a day of my choice (that WEEK ONLY) I can consume more than I may have earned for that day. This way I will still be under my weekly goal.
I have my spreadsheet set up with the weeks like MFP Monday-Sunday. This helps 'cause I don't always want to work out on Saturday but I will have a date night or family function that I may want the extra calories for.0 -
Some people are confused, the question was asking about banked calories, NOT BINGE EATING. The concept of banking calories means that if on Mon to Fri you consume 500 calories less then the MFP target on Saturday you go out and have 3 beers (coors light @110 calories each).
That is not binging or overeating. Obviously you set yourself back 330 calories but you have to live your life too. You will still hit your weekly weight loss target, you just won't be going over and above, which isn't bad.
There's some crazy diehards on here who live and die by their calorie intake, life's a marathon not a race. 1 or 2 days a month where you go slightly over a daily caloric limit is not the end of the world and doesn't sabatoge the 29 days where you were strict with your calories.0 -
I wouldn't do it. Could be a very dangerous splurge for me. I just take it one day at a time0

im glad someone has some sense about them. Ive been called obsessed and everything under the sun, truthfully I could care less. Ive lost 46lbs doing what I do and im happy. Everybody is free to do what they wanna do, but I agree with you, I wouldnt 'save' calories. my opinion.0 -
I did it when I was on WW. It worked for me. My splurge day was weigh in day though. After weigh in I ate whatever I wanted for 2 meals. Then resumed my efforts for the rest of the week.0

^This!!! That's a good plan!0 -
Not 100% intentionally. There are days when I have like 900 calories leftover and I'm full and can't eat anymore (my net calories are still usually 1200 and up) and that'll stay that way for a few days, but then occasionally, I will overeat a bit. I try to shrug it off and think of how many 'extra' calories I have leftover from the week. I still beat myself up a LITTLE over it because I don't want it to become something I get used to. I'd rather use those extra calories for a faster weight loss if I can0

I don't bank calories but I go into my week with a set amount of "weekly bonus calories" similar to weight watchers. I eat the bulk of them on the weekend and spread the rest out over my week. I prefer this method over my other. It allows my splurges and keeps this realistic for me...in the long run, that keeps me on track more than being overly strict. I enjoy beer, pizza and other foods so this helps me to fit those into my week in moderation. Eating the same amount of calories every single day would be incredibly boring not to mention having hjgh/low days is great for your metabolism and can prevent plateaus. I have a detailed explanation of what my "plan" is like on my profile. Feel free to add me to take a look. Good luck & do what works for you!0

I typically dont do that. Once I fall asleep, I'm done and the new day starts a new calorie ledger. However, from time to time I do give myself a "I did worked out too much yesterday and didnt ate enough" in which case I might go a bit over but it only applies to a day before or day ahead thing, never more than that0
