I've heard a lot of mixed views on this topic but I would just like to share my results:

I have been Tobacco Free for: 52 Days
I have not smoked: 2091 Cigarettes in that time.
That equals: 105 Packs.
I've saved: $512.41 by not buying these Cigarettes.

While Quitting Smoking I've also:

Lost: 37 Pounds
Went from size: 26 Women's to size 20 Women's.
Started with: No daily Exercise to the ability to complete the 30DS with no breaks and Walk/Run/Jog 5 miles.

Listen, to those who are scared to quit smoking in fear of gaining weight, YOU CAN DO IT!

The toxins in cigarettes are not only killing you but are limiting your ability to exercise to the fullest and BURNNNNN that FAT! We won't even mention the decrease in your overall health while smoking.

Never give up! I was a 2 pack a day smoker and coach potato. If I can do it, you can do it! Trust me on this!

Anybody trying to quit smoking and lose weight, please add me. I will provide you support and encouragement to make your story a success story!

Take care everybody!

Great effort! I actually started jogging years ago when I quit. I can't remember if I gained weight or not but I don't think so. Hopefully you will be able to help others on here.

I agree 100%! IT can be done. I was a 1-2 pack a day smoker for 17 years. I quit smoking the same day I decided to start eating healthier and exercising. You-can-do-it!

I quit about the same time as you.

I did initially put on a little bit of weight (4-5 lbs) because I had the urge to bake things every afternoon, and I indulged that urge. But, I was also walking every day and then I started to track my calories on here and started trying to run... and it's coming back down.

Even if I'd stayed at five lbs heavier, I know it would have been worth it.

Today I hiked 20 miles, including climbing some fair-sized hills, and I couldn't have done that as a smoker.

AWESOME to you ALL!!! I just decided that I did not need to smoke and have been smoke free for almost 4 weeks now. In the gym, watching my diet (eating healthy if I can figure it all out) and just trying to stay positive.

Good Job! I quit smoking on Jan 2 2012 and have not smoked since then, which is big for me because I have tried to quit many of times. But I didn't gain any weight because the day I quit was the day I decided that I was going to be healthier and get into shape. So It can be done you just have to want to quit (that partwas for the people who are considering but arescared :) also I am able to work out take the steps with out feeling like I need to be hooked up to an oxygen tank LoL

Good job! You can do it, stick with it and soon enough you'll wonder how you ever managed any other way. I know it sounds cliche, but it's true!

I quit Jan 2011. I had urges to binge eat but would reach for a handful of sunflower seeds instead. I chose sunflower seeds because they take time to eat and occupy your hands. You just have to prepare yourself. Am now running 3 miles a day which I could obviously not have done before.

In the interest of full disclosure I did use a miracle pill for 3 months. Chantix. I had zero side effects from it and it completely 100% made smoking not interesting to me. Infact, it made it gross. It's not cheap, about $170 a month. That's the cost of 1 pack a day though!

I'd do a free commercial for them, freaking miracle pill. 1-2 pack a day habit for 17 years, 1 week on Chantix and I tossed 3/4 of a pack. Haven't had a single puff since.

Great job! I have quit again ( and hopefully the last) three days ago. Have been exercising like a mad woman and trying to eat right. It's so hard cause in the last couple months I have had two surgeries and am now in treatment for H.Pylori. All I want is something sweet, even sugar free gum and that sometimes hurts my stomach. Congrats to all that have quit! It's hard but so worth it!!:)

Isn't Chantix wonderful?! I also quit using Chantix; haven't had a cigarette since Feb. 21st. I was a 1-1 1/2 pack a day for the past 24 years. Nothing else worked for me all of the other hundreds of times I've tried to quit. And yes, it's disgusting to me now...can't stand the smell of it.

I quit smoking just over 4 years ago. Several people, including my best friend at that time, believed they'd never see the day that I would quit. But I did. I had lost about 30 pounds before I quit. I gained 40 after I quit. I didn't quit for my health. I didn't care about my health at that time.

I started this journey toward a new, healthy me last year. I didn't get serious about it until I found MFP in August. Here I am today 113 pounds lighter than the me who stood on the doctors office scales last June...

We sabotage ourselves so much with the "I can't" thought process... It took me almost 40 years to realize, I can... I've GOT this... and nobody can take it away from me.

Congratulations on your decision to stop smoking (everyone who has done so - it's not an easy thing to do). You got this!

Miracle drug as far as I'm concerned! Even if it's all mental and it was a placebo, it worked for me!

I had my last smoke 67 days ago and have lost 19 pounds in the meantime. The only things I did were stick to my calorie goal and keep myself busy. Every time I wanted to light up I got up off my butt and did something instead of eating. I did a lot of cleaning, painted, layed a new floor in one room, etc. I was REALLY productive that first month! Also, don't sweat gaining a few pounds. Gaining 5 pounds is a lot healthier than smoking!

That is SO TRUE. I hate to think there are people who won't quit smoking for fear of gaining a few pounds. It's so much better to be a non-smoker. It makes being active so much easier so, in the long run, you'll weigh less.

I used nicotine lozenges, myself. They're like a little tic-tac of minty nicotine you put between your cheek and gum. I would sort of nurse the same lozenge all day - taking it out and storing it on a slip of paper until the next time I needed a fix - so it was really inexpensive.

Some people say gum/lozenges/patches don't work for them, that they end up just addicted to the nicotine substitute. But, I figured I'd rather be addicted to them than smoking tobacco. As it turned out, I was able to wean myself off the lozenges quite easily within a month of quitting smoking.
