The general idea is to do 3 days of cardio for at least 30 minutes and two days of strength training for 30 minutes. Make sure you don't do back to back days of strength training. Now, with that being said, you can exercise more than that. I like doing group fitness and the classes are usually an hour. Sometime I get in moods where I workout for a long time, sometimes I just do the minimum. With however many calories you burn, you will see your total calories allowed adjust. Make sure you are eating those exercise calories so your finished total calorie count is around 100 off. That is just my humble opinion.

    thanks!
  • Well the recomended amount of exercise for everyone is around 30 mins a day, 5 days a week. Cardio should be done at least 2-3 times a week, while the rest can be calisthenics, walking, strength training, etc. As for me, I go to the gym twice a week and use the elliptical for 30 mins, then the bicycle for 25. And on the days I don't go to the gym I walk for 30 mins, and do Calisthenics for 30 mins at home. It's also good to put a day of rest in between days of exercise if you are just starting, that way you won't be as sore and you can work up to doing everyday.

    Hope this helps! =]

I can't do strength training because I have a bad back, so I do 5 days a week on the elliptical for 30 mins. It has been working great. Plus now my endurance is way up which is really great.

I have trouble doing some strength training if it pulls my back, my back is really tight and weak, when it does this we just move on to another exercise that doesn't trigger the muscles in my back. I started working out with a trainer so I can learn which exercises work what muscles. What is wrong with your back?

I have a degenerative disc so pretty much anything that even slightly affects the back I can't do, and that includes running (too high impact). The ellipitical has been a life saver because it is so low impact it doesn't hurt me at all.

What about strength training that doesn't target the back? I do alot of them and my trainer makes sure I don't feel it in my back.

No I can't do it. Even though it doesn't work the back, any strain whatsoever somehow always negatively affects my back, so I just stick to the elliptical :). It works great.
