11yr old at the gym

I went to the gym yesterday to do my workout. When I got there I put my stuff in the locker and weighed myself, like I do every time I go to the gym. When I got off the scale two girls came into the locker room and one of them got on the scale, she looked at it and turned to her friend and said "I don't know how to use this scale." The scale is the kind that they use in Dr's offices to weigh you, the balance kind.

I asked her if she wanted me to show her how to use the scale. She said sure. These two girls were young, and they were shorter than me (I'm 5'3"). I showed the girl how to use the scale and she weighed in at 119.5. I told her her weight and she got a disappointed look on her face and said, "I need to lose SO much weight." I asked her how old she was and she said, "11 almost 12." I told her she shouldn't worry about her weight right now, that once she gets her height it will even out. She looked at me and thanked me, and her friend went on to weigh herself.

I remember when I was 11 I didn't think about being fat or weighing too much, that set in when I was 14 or 15. I think it's ok for kids to think of being healthy, but I felt sad for the girl who thought her weight was too much. I'm sure her mother was at the gym, too although I don't know who her mother was. I just didn't want this girl to feel bad about herself because of her weight.

Girls have impossibly perfect looking models and actors to measure up to. It's no surprise that they always feel insufficient.

Hey, even us guys some times want to look like actors on TV.

Personally, I think it's great to hear of an eleven year old keeping an eye on their weight/health. As long as they don't get obsessive or unhealthy, I think it's a fantastic thing.

I started going to the gym when I was 11.
I've always been a chunky kid though... I was 5'0 and weighed in the 160s.
My mom always made me feel really horrible about how fat I was, so she got me a gym membership and drove me there three times a week and would sit there and watch me run on the treadmill.

Maybe she just has low self-esteem.

11 ? it's sad they would be thinking about that stuff already... kids should just be running around having fun and that would keep them at a fine weight in itself.... they have a strange view of fat and thin though.. isn't there an age minimum to get in the gym?
  • You can't really get a whole picture of someone from one conversation. There are some kids that are forced into it and are made to not feel good enough due to their weight while other kids have parents who are truly looking out for their health and happiness because they genuinely care about them. I wish my parents had put pressure on me to lose weight when I was that age rather than waiting for me to do it on my own at twenty-one. It's not that I don't feel I was or am good enough, it's that it could have saved them and me a lot of hardship and expensive medical bills in the future.

You can be in the gym at 11-12 if you have a parent there.

I feel similarly. I don't advocate teenage girls striving to look like the ultra thin models seen in magazines and other media outlets, but having *some* consciousness of health/fitness/weight is a positive thing, in my opinion.

I mean, how many overweight kids do you see out there? Their numbers seem to be rising, not decreasing. I'd rather see kids being more aware of health/weight issues than more overweight kids being ostracized for their weight or being diagnosed with diabetes and other health related issues.

I said in my original post that I think it's ok for kids to think about being healthy, however I think it should be in general terms of being healthy not looking at the scale and being worried about a number on the scale. Who knows how tall this girl will grow up to be. This girl did not look fat, she had a little bit of fullness, but it wasn't chunky, she looked healthy for an upcoming growth spurt.

my daughter is 13 yrs old and weighs around 135lbs. it is alittle high for her height, she is 5'ft. I never talk about diets or HAVE to lose weight. I take her to the track with me and thats our alone time to talk about anything she wants. Not realizing she really is working out. I cook healthy meals for the whole family. i cut out buying cookies, sugary cereals and other sugary snacks. I've replaced them with trail mix and popcorn. if im working out at home, i motivate her to walk on the treadmill for at least 20 mts. when we are both done, we watch movies together. My daughter is a very confidante girl. She's figured me out on how i try to incorporate exercise and healthy eating habits and she tells me "mom i know what your doing" and she just smiles. I would never criticize my daughter or make any unhealthy remarks about her weight. i just try to motivate her by my actions. And its not so much that i want her to lose weight, my main concern is diabetes. it runs in my family and her dads side of the family. I tell her i just want her to learn to take care of herself with exercise and healthy nutrition so she wont have problems when she is my age.

I think that's awesome and a good way to approach the matter. I go on walks on the weekend and I take my kids with me. They're young 4yr and 10 months, but they love being pushed in the stroller. My 4yr old like to ride his bike on some of the paths too. I think it's perfectly ok to bring your kids along on stuff like that. My mom had me go walking with her 3 times a week and we'd walk 3-5 miles. Unfortunately my mother did make comments about my weight and still continued to make comments into my adult life. It's frustrating. The comments have stopped now that I'm trying to lose the weight.

I do think some of the ideal does come from the mom's..if mom is super skinny and complains..her daughters are going to complain. I know once I lost my weight..my daughters both had higher self esteem cause I did. Granted..they eat the junk..and I tell them what it will do to their bodies..but never do I say anything about how "fat" they are..

Its hard to live in society today....My daughters are both build so differently. My oldest is almost 5'7" and weighs just as much as my 5'2" 12 yr old..My oldest is very lean..whereas my youngest has a butt and thighs..but no fat on her...I think the thing is that they both have to live with what God gave them. Both of my kids eat real healthy..that is when I am around..but also when they go to school.

Bottom line..it all starts in the home..

I answered the comment about the age already. If you have a parent with you, you can be in the gym at that age, but you're supposed to be supervised at all times.

Poor kid. Who thinks about their weight at 11? I mean unless she was morbidly obese it's terrible that kids have to worry about dieting or how they look.

I hear where you are coming from.
My daughter is 12 nearly 13 and we spend time together swimming and she is always trying to prove that she is fitter than me etc( which she is) but I caught her the other day inspecting her lovely pre-teen belly that is perfect! She was talking about it needing to be even smaller. So I asked her where she was going to put her insides as the only way she could be any different would be to have a concave stomach! She took it on board and laughed and hopefully will stop worrying, But joking aside, I am aware of the fine line between a healthy interest and an unhealthy obsession. It is only because we spend this time together that I even realised that it was an issue.

I am planning to add more emphasis on the nutritional value of foods as this is something that I am rapidly learning from this site.
