Weight Training Advice

Hi, I'm new here and have been trying me best to soak up all the info available (which is tough because there's such great advice.) However, I've been hearing a lot about how weight lifting is just as, if not better, for you than any cardio out there. yet I honestly have never lifted weights and do not know where to begin. Is there a set number of "reps" I should be doing, or something like that? Thank you for the help!
