2 protein bars a day?!

Hi all,

Sometimes I have a protein bar as morning snack & afternoon snack (just for convenience and not every single day). Is this ok occasionally as long as it fits within my daily calorie intake?

I really must try and have my whey protein powder more...i just find it easier to have the bars on the go and people tend to ask what i'm drinking when i'm shaking up a whey protein shake...so avoids all the questions in my office by having a bar! xxx

I make my own protein bars and eat them anywhere from once or twice a day. They are low in sugar and are full of healthy fats. They fill me up too :)

4 scoops of chocolate whey protein powder
    2 cups of oats
1/3 cup of fat free milk
    1/2 cup of natural peanutbutter.

    Yummm.
  • Yum!! sound good!! sounds REALLY silly but how exactly do you make them? do you have to cook them or just mould them into bars and put them in the fridge to set? thankyou :)

Personally I try to avoid shakes and bars for protein. I try my hardest to get them from all natural sources. If it's a heavy workout day I might snack on half a protein bar, but not often at all. I don't like all the ingredients I see on the back, what are they?! But a lot of people like them and have success with them. Sorry, I'm just no help at all! :ohwell:

I mix it all into a bowl and press it into a 9x9 brownie pan and then put them into the freezer for 40 minutes. After 40 minutes I take them out and cut them into 6 protein bars and store them in the refrigerator. You could cut them bigger or smaller, it all depends on your preference.

The great things about the one's I make is you know exactly all of the ingredients in the bars. :)

You are right hun. I agree really!! i am just starting out really but i know that once i have only a bit left to lose (currently just under 1.5 stone left to lose - already lost over 1 stone) i will have to cut out the bars/shakes and opt for natural sources. But for now they are really helping me.

Ahh that makes sense! thank you!!! sounds silly (AGAIN!) but do you just use normal oats (like porridge oats?!). thanks!!!

I use the Quaker 1-minute oats. Steel cut oats would work too. As long as they are dry I don't see why it would make a difference :)

  • Will these work with almond milk, rice milk or soya milk by the way?

    Sure :)

And I'm honestly not sure about the macros. But it all depends on if you decide to use whole milk, reduced, soy, the type of peanutbutter you use, the type of protein powder you use.

Sorry I'm no help with the macros.

Well, I don't think there is a problem per se.

Just keep in mind that lean meats and such offer a perfect balance of amino acids. The building blocks of your body. No science can mimic that perfect process period. So I would say as long as your eating a healthy, well balanced diet full of fruits, vegs, lean meats and that the bars and shakes aren't the only source of protein in your diet and a true supplement. Then I say it good. There are FAR MORE important things to consider than simple calories. Such as quality.

I would add as long as the supplements are not taking over more than half your protein sources, your doing good. One way I do this, is I will add a scoop protein with a cup of plain Fage yogurt. So half the protein is yogurt and half whey. Just small comprimises make a huge diff. It's just like a chocolate mousse.

When cut into 8 bars the macros are as follows:

    Calories 244
    Carbs 14
    Fat 10
    Protein 20

And only 2 grams of sugar.
