Growing hair long....

I recommend switching shampoos and conditioners to sulfate free. I use Deva Curl and love it. I also don't wash my hair every day. My hair is slowly but surely growing back, but since switching shampoos it started growing about a 1/2 inch/month. Pregnancy has made it grow even faster (1 inch/month) but I don't recommend getting pregnant unless you first and foremost want a baby (lol).
I have heard about this product called Ovation Cell therapy but I have not myself used it. Always google independent product reviews with any new product before purchasing.0 -
Get pregnant. It worked great for a friend of mine.
I'd totally have your gingery baby... RAWR!0 -

My hair grows super fast. You just need to take care of it, and put effort into making it super healthy. Use healthy product, don't use heat on it excessively. Put moisture rich product on your ends, trim regularly. And getting enough vitamins is important. Lots of breakage makes it impossible to maintain long strands, and you need a lot of long strands for overall longer hair! If you want names of some good products just message me0

Never cut it.
Never blow dry it.
Eat well. Plenty of essential fatty acids... flax oil, hemp oil, raw nuts/seeds, avocados.0 -
My mom and aunt and a friend of mine are all hair derssers....Trim it more than twice a year...the more often you get a trim, the less split ends you will have...when you get split ends, it sort of stunts the hair growth. many people don't think it helps, but it really does...also, over brushing can cause damage, and don't condition every day, only every other!0

Trim more! It grows faster after a trim.
This sounds crazy, but it's true! Kinda like the eat more to lose thing ~ I find that to be true as well!
Also, I think hair tends to grow more when it's warm. I know mine does.
It prevents split ends and breakage, but does nothing to change the growth rate.
No, it doesn't change the growth rate, but it insures that what grows stays there...
That's sort of what I was getting at.0 -

Okay - well, I stand corrected then.
I will say that MY hair grows REALLY fast, strong, shiny and healthy. I get it trimmed every 3 or 4 months.0 -
Per this thread you have been advised to:
1. Never cut your hair.
2. Cut it on the first quarter of the lunar phase for speed
3. Cut it on the last quarter of the lunar phase for strength
4. Cut it regularly.
I love you magical interwebs!!!!!!0 -
I'm also growing mine out... I don't do anything fancy, I just avoid 'dying and frying' it, only wash it a few times a week, condition a lot, eat enough (emphasis on protein and fat), exercise a lot, and drink a lot of water. My hair grows pretty steady at around 7-8" a year, and is super healthy.
I don't get trims unless I need them - but since I don't really damage my hair I don't have split ends often at all.
No idea if any of that stuff I do has a big effect, I think hair growth is mostly about health, time and genetics... and avoiding damaging heat treatments.... We just have to be patient. :flowerforyou:0 -
Bump... I'd love to grow my hair out some, too.0

hair grows approximately 6 inches per year, depending on your person.
in 4 years, that would be 24 inches. let's assume you cut off an inch and a half twice a year (because i highly doubt you're measuring exactly one inch). that brings you down to 12 inches. by blow drying it and straightening it, you are damaging it further, which is probably accounting for the rest of the difference.
be patient. stop using heat on your hair. use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.0 -
I would love to grow mine out if it didn't automatically produce split ends.0

LOL. Thanks, but only if you'll claim the child support bills.0 -
i just switched back to prenatals and biotin and omega 3 fish oil supplements. it has at least stopped breaking (within just the last week of starting my new regimen) so i am hoping it will help it grow longer too.0
-
prenatals for sure!0

About the trimming: when your hair starts to get split or frail ends, the ends break off. You end up with a bunch of 1-2" fragments all over your bathroom floor, and your hair appears to stay the same length rather than growing. Trimming, or even dusting (taking a pair of fine scissors and cutting only the very splits off where you see them) can counter that a bit.
I'd say go for prenatal vitamins. If anything, they seem to make your hair thicker. Oil from the neck down helps to keep ends soft as well. My favorite is jojoba oil since anything coconut makes me sick; jojoba has no scent and hair absorbs it well.0 -
You guys are amazing. Im going to check out prenatals.
Love all the responses. MFP is filled with great personalities.
I am NOT going to get pregnant, unless you guys wanna help me foot the bill.0 -

I'll just take the baby if you'll carry it... Win:Win ;-)0 -
In India we use alot of olive oil, coconut oil and mustard oil and massage our heads with it. Our hairs are usually long and have a healthy glow along with being thick. Dont use all three oils at the same time but pick one oil, massage your head with it or have a relative/friend massage your head for you (very relaxing too!). I prefer coconut oil btw and I massage it and sleep with it and shampoo it in the morning
Good Luck0 -

I would say trim it more often. The longer time goes between trims the more split ends you get and more has to be cut off. I get a 1/2 inch cut every 8 weeks. Once a year I get about 7-8 inches cut off, but it grows back quickly.0

Im 50% indian, my mom 100%. She said growing up she would coconut oil her sisters and moms hair everyday. I have a really sensitive scalp... I coconut oil every once in a while, but too often makes it itch.0 -
I feel like when I started eating a lot more protein my hair started growing very fast. I try for 100g of protein per day since I lift weights. I heard hair is made of protein, so that actually makes sense...0

That's where I was a regular member when I was growing mine out. Been maintaining tailbone-length hair for a few years now.0 -
I've been having the same problem, and my boss told me prenatals too. It seems to be working, it's faster than it was when I was just using biotin, so I'd recommend it, as it's also pretty healthy for you to get the extra vitamins as wel!!! Good luck and keep us updated!0
