I had blood work done the day before I started Atkins. Blood work was taken on December 29, 2008 and again on April 24, 2009.
I have been eating saturated fats (butter and animal fats on meat), avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, small amounts of peanut oil................but NO transfats.
I also eat more veggies and fruits than I ever did before. I eat natural nut butters to include peanut butter, cashew butter, macadamia nut butter, almond butter.
I forgo the grains except for oats. I also eat an occasional sweet potato and the most processed food I have eaten is Dreams Field low carb pasta.
My doctor is pleased with my progress and he is the one that told me Atkins is the way to go anyway. I was already familar with Atkins as I have done it before, but this year something clicked with me to make it a life long thing, instead of the vanity reasons of losing weight to look hawt!!
Anyway, sorry for rambling on.................
My blood work has gotten better for both cholesterol and my sugar. The only thing I need to work on is getting my triglycerides down as that is more detrimental to my health than my cholesterol.
This is for the 4 months I have been on Atkins. It should be even better in July 2009 when I get it checked again.

I am bumping up this topic as people think Atkins is so unhealthy............
I am willing to post my menus up against anyone on this site to compare...............
My menus will only compare to those folks on here that eat clean and pretty natural and organic........0 -
I am also on atkins. I have found that even TRYING to not worry about calories and fat. . . my low carb meals have put me below the calorie amount this site recommends that i eat. It's hard to wrap my brain around the idea that i am eating plenty of food, and foods i wouldn't have associated with being too healthy, yet i eat far less calories than i used to.
mind you it has only been 4 days for me. . . but considering the snacks/staples i eat. . I don't see this getting any different as time goes on.0 -

It should change as you move up the carb ladder and start adding in different foods..........
Your fat and protein % will naturally decrease and your carb % will increase..........it is slow going and I like the structure of Atkins so you can see if you have any food allergies as you re-introduce foods back into your eating plan.
I am very happy about my bloodwork after 4 months of Atkins.0 -

Also, are you eating a lot of veggies???
You should be eating 15-20 grams of carbs coming from veggies from the Induction list each day. That is very healthy.0 -

yeah. that's the reason i can't make my calories this site recommends. even 10-12 grams from veggies = VERY low calories
one day i hit my carb limit but was barely over 600 calories. So i've been tryin to find a happy balance between veggie carbs and other carbs. I'm not a big cheese eater, but it seems to be one of the best high calorie/low carb foods out there.
either way, I have been combining it with daily exercise and tons of water. So far 10 lbs. I can't complain.0 -

Fantastic!!!
You have an excellent start.
That is one mis-conception from Atkins that people don't understand..........yes, you can eat the fat off the meat and with those veggies our calories are lower than most people that try to practice everything in moderation!!
Why don't you come join our group in the Motivation and Support Area...........

So you really don't eat much carbs. I don't want to offend you but I am curious about your diet and how it might compare to mine. I eat a balanced diet of fats, proteins and carbs. I probably eat more than most with total calories per day of about 1500-1700. I exercise at least four times a week with walking and jogging in 75 minute intervals. I have lost 7 lbs so far. I have just heard so many bad things about eliminating or reducing carbs from the diet. For someone who has never tried it and is curious, should I talk to my doctor first?0

No, I do eat carbs..................but I mostly eat a lot of fat and protein.
I get my carb sources from the following:
Nuts
Seeds
Vegetables
Fruit
Beans
Only grains I eat on occasion are brown rice and steel cut oats (this is like 1 or 2 times a month)
Occasional Baked Sweet Potato0 -

Well, one reason people think Atkins is so unhealthy is that, when it had that early 2000's boom, a lot of people DID eat very unhealthily. Yeah, everyone enjoyed their bacon and eggs and butter...but then people started missing their ice cream and bread, so viola, "low carb" replacements, loaded with trans fat and artificial nasties.
And I remember in the early 00's, watching the video when my mom went on it (she was an unhealthy Atkinser). I do not think Atkins emphasized vegetables NEARLY enough. Less "woohoo, CHEEEESE!!!" and more "FIBER! BROCCOLI! ASPARAGUS!" But that was a while ago.
LeanLioness, you truly understand the proper low carb lifestyle! I run better on 40-30-30, but it's so silly to think that everyone fits into the same mold. And like you, I get most of my carbs from veggies, fruits, nuts, and beans. I find I feel way better only having a serving or two of grains a day.0 -

I totally agree. Most people hear atkins and they think you eat no carbs. They do not realize that you can get a lot of carbs from fruits, vegetables and nuts.0 -
I tried to talk to a diabetic about atkins of course they had a misunderstanding of what it was thinking all you eat is bacon. But the person talked to a dietician and the dietician said that you need whole grains and that you can't cut out any food group. I wanted to yell as say you're a diabetic 30lbs overweight considering gastric bypass how could cutting out whole grains be unsafer than let someone slit you open and cut your stomach in half.
No harm meant to those who have gastric bypass:flowerforyou:0 -

I would love to see an example of your food diary. My cholesterol was at 200 at my last appointment and he wants me to lower it by eating low fat and exercise. I have been doing that since late february(not strict) and yet the blood work I did a week ago had me at 200:huh: So why did he tell me to keep doing what I have been doing. Last time that my cholesterol was checked was Jan2008 and it was 197 then . I was eating lousy at that time0 -
Hi Momma2four -
I follow Atkins and eat a ton of veggies and get my fats from ANIMAL fats (chicken skin, fat on my steaks) and mostly from olive oil and coconut oil, I eat a little avocado as I am not the fondest of it either, but it is good for me.. I eat a little butter as I am not the biggest fan of dairy, but I do eat Fage yougrt.
I eat a lot of salads, cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli (have an intolerance to it and makes me bloat), tomatoes, celery, spinach, stir fry veggies, green beans, brussel sprouts, spaghetti squash, zucchini, acorn squash.
As far as fruits, I eat berries, cherries, melons, plums, nectarines, peaches, apples and occasionally some fresh pineapple and grapefruit.
I eat raw nuts and seeds. Natural nut butters, now trying to stay away from peanut butter, but that is a hard one - cuz I love peanut butter.
Here is the kicker..................eat natural and exercise. Forgo the breads, pastas, rice, cereal, sugar filled, fat-free yogurts. Opt for full fat varieties and have it checked in 6-8 weeks from when you started eating this way and see how it goes..............0 -
I was on Adkins in the early 2000's back when it was eat strickly meat to get into Ketosis. I weighed 275 and got down to 196 in about 6 months. But I got off the diet and ballooned up to 314 pounds. Your body is just not meant to eat only meat, that's why I am glad to see that the revised Adkins is so much healthier.
I just started the Paleo Diet (aka the caveman diet or stone age diet) Have been on it a couple days and have lost about 3 pounds. Basically what the diet calls for is eating anything a caveman could have gotten his hands on. Rational is that that is how are bodies are genetically apt to survive and thrive. You can not eat any processed foods, you have to stick to veggies, fruitss, roots, lean meats, and nuts. So far I have really enjoyed it, and I know I am eating a ton healthier than I was. My concern is that I love the fruits so much I am neglecting the veggies, I still eat some squash, zuccinni, broccli or cauliflower everyday, but I eat more cantaloupe, apples, grapes, pears, and berries. Regardless of whether I eat enough veggies, am i still on the right path by eating so many fruits because it's within the diet? What is the downside of eating too many frutis in relation to veggies? where do I stand to gain by eating more veggies, weight loss wise and health wise?
Thank you very much for any help or insights that you a have.

If you went by the book, it was never meant to be Meat only. I have the 1972 edition and the 2002 edition.
I will not buy the current versions as they are written to include too many processed foods.
Atkins is also not written to go off the plan, neither is the Paleo plan either. So I hope you are doing something that satisfies you to stick with for life.
I don't know if you are diabetic or insulin resistant, but I would not be eating that much fruit in a day's time. Even though it is natural sugar, it is still sugar and the whole thought behind Paleo eating is to control insulin levels. With that much fruit daily, you will not control insulin.
I am switching over from Atkins to The Primal Blue Print plan. I am reading the book and will be switching over when I go grocery shopping.0 -
I am looking over the primal diet and noticed legumes are not allowed. That would mean giving up the green beans unless and exception is made b/c of their high water content.Hi Momma2four -

I can have green beans - they are referring to legumes as in the dried variety. Lioness, have you tried Omega 3's to lower your triglycerides?0
-
I am so confused I am diabetic type 1 and I take insulin three times a day two pills at breakfast and dinner and then a shot at night. My doctor told me just to watch portion control and eat a balanced diet of whole grains, fruits, veggies, lean meat, and diary. So far I have been following this, But everybody is saying that pasta, breads, rice is bad for you. I do not understand how if there suppose to be part of a balanced diet.0
-
Lioness, have you tried Omega 3's to lower your triglycerides?
I eat plenty of nuts and fish and I supplement with the Fish oil.
The reason that my triglycerides stay high is because I am still eating too much fruit and some of the veggies I have been eating are higher in carbs.
I really need to eat NO fruit for about 6 or 8 weeks and they will sharply drop. I get my blood work drawn on Monday, so we will see where they are at then.0 -
How did the blood work go?0
