Does size matter to you?

Why, I ask anyone who cares, are so many women concerned about the size of clothing they wear. I hear women say "I'm a size 2", or recently a friend said she's a size 0.
Here's the truth, and many of you know this: clothing manufacturers are putting a smaller size number in ready-to-wear because it sells clothing. Otherwise known as 'vanity-sizing' many higher end designers use the smaller size label to attract buyers. (or should I say braggers). Seriously, I wear a larger size in Target clothes than I do in Ralph Lauren or DKNY.
I am only reporting this to women in general, not to argue or start a heated discussion, but just the facts. I've been overweight for about 15 years, but I saved many pieces of clothing (size 14, when I weighed 168). After topping out at size 18 and 224 lbs, I am now back at 165 lbs. I have bought many new pants and dresses, mostly at Macys and was excited to recently buy a size 8 pant. (eyes rolling and thinkin to myself: yeah, right)
No, this is not bragging, this is vanity sizing. At 165 lbs. there's no way I wear a size 8. I never wore less than a 12 even in high school. I went home with my new size 8 and 10 clothes, wondering how so many women get all caught up in this size thing. So I went to the very back of my closet and pulled out some of the saved size 14's I have. They fit perfectly, not big, not tight, just perfect.
So when someone asked me recently what size I wear, it seemed like such a lie that I wear a size 8 pant. Instead I said, "it depends on how much I paid for it". I'm an avid sewing enthusiast and I also kept all my cool size 14 patterns. So I made myself a new pair of capris in a 14 and they fit perfectly.
As a former professional dressmaker, I made it a habit NOT to reveal to a client what size I cut her dress. She don't wanna hear it, and would probably be pissed at me. Instead I gave an explanation that I drafted the pattern to her measurements. Sorta true. I made literally hundreds of bridesmaid and bridal gowns over a 25 year period and to all those who said they are size 2 or (ahem) 0--I always cut a 'pattern-size' 6 and took very few alterations from there. In most patterns, 6 is the smallest offered, sometimes a 4 in a Vogue pattern.
I made gowns for a musical a few years ago, and asked the gals what size dress they wear, thinking it would help me cut the dresses in the general area and alter from there. Three of the gals said they were size 14 and one said 16. According to their measurements, I cut them a size 22--yikes, don't let 'em see that pattern sittin around. Serious size denial.
Well, that's my two-cents worth on whether or not size matters :~)

LOL - Totally agree. I'm now a size zero and sometimes that's even too big. I was this approximate weight and size in my teens and 20s and wore a size 8. But you know what's even funnier? My sister - who tells me she still fits a size 8 (even though she's gained 50 pounds) and is very proud of it - but tells me that my size zero is just vanity sizing and doesn't mean anything. Double standard? Nah...

I'm glad you brought this up. I really hate vanity sizing & the smaller size I get, the more I doubt on it. I think its human nature that we are in denial of the truth & that we like to fantasize everything including our clothing sizes. Just the other day I bought a size 25 jeans or equivalent to US size 0 (I live in another country & here the pants sizes are based according to your waistline in inches) and they fit perfectly. However the thing is my waistline is 26.5 inches & I know that there's no way that I could fit perfectly in a size 25 jeans unless I wanted a muffin top.

I wonder if men go through this. My hubby still wears the same size, so I guess it's only in women's clothing.

That's because we women are more concerned with clothes sizes than men. I never heard a guy being conscious about his shirt or pant sizes.

That is pretty annoying. I don't pay too much attention to those numbers (although it is nice to see them going down lately)...I pay more attention to how my clothing is fitting. Even within sizes, different manufacturers are very different, so sizing just doesn''t seem to matter too much.

I so agree and love this topic. I went from 212 to 164. Recently bought new clothes...I usually purchase previously worn (used) clothing. I was surprised to see I comfortly fit into a size 10.....NO WAY

    Nice topic...thanks
  • I really don't care what the label says. What I care about is that a brand is consistent in sizings. I hate it when they are all over the place meaning I can't order online. I often stick with brands that are consistent when ordering online.
  • I do care what size I am in a way, since I tend to wear the same brands for years so it is some reflection of my fluctuating size. I would say that dress pattern sizes are much different than typical retailer sizes and don't really have much to do with common fashion sizing, regardless of vanity sizing from brand to brand.

My pants have been the same size for 15 years, even though I've gained 30 in that time... My weight went up top.. Went from wearing Large size shirts to XL size shirts. Pants were SLIGHTLY tight lately, before losing my first 5 pounds. Feel ok now.

Yeah that would be annoying, I haven't noticed it so much in male stuff. I'm a large and or medium in shirts. Some brands in large look like I'm wearing a chesty bond shirt, tight as hell, yet a medium in another brands fits nicley. This shiz should be universal for male and female clothing lines.

I think that we do tend to focus too much on the numbers! I can only say that my wardobe was filled with clothes that were mainly a UK 16/18 a the start of this journey but that was probably because if it meant I had to buy a 20 I just refused. Now the majority of my clothes come from the same store so the majority of my clothes are a size 12 although I agree with the manufacturers variation in sizes I also since having lost weight bought a lovely Lipsy Dress UK 14 and more recently a H & M jacket size 16, of course I get a little dissapointed about buying a size 16 again but I thik that i just the culture we live in. I wouldn't not buy it now as I figure 2.5 stone lighter it is still a major achievment and you wear what fits, if it fit's good eg not squeezing into a 12 when the 16 fits then I think you look better! But this point is made a lot easier when you are at the lighter end of the scale.

Same for men especially if you get clothes from abroad. An american XL is bigger than a British XL which is different than a continental European XL.

It is only women that put up with this. My husband wears the same size he's worn for the last 35 years, and I can vouch that he hasn't gained or lost more than 5 pounds either way.
