    Actually they are not.

People say it's expensive to eat healthy but it's really not.

You can make a whole meal from rice, beans and veggies. Also, there was an article recently that showed the breakdown on how much healthy food you get for $10 or $20 and showed really that you can eat healthy for less.

Not that I'm suggesting you buy all of your organic fruit and veggies at Walmart but they are the largest seller of organic food in the US so they can keep their price points low.

Trust me, the stores are not against you.

    It's just the food marketers.

Did you know that something with added fiber is just a food marketing scheme? (thank you Jillian Michaels). It's not the same fiber found in brocolli or any veg. It's really not even handled by the body the same way.

Fall for less food marketing scheme (skinny people do not eat diet food after all) and you'll be okay. Plus, you'll save $$ each week.

Personally for me, I cant eat rice, potatoes, beans, breads, pasta, corn.... bad metabolic disorder... I actually save TONS of money not purchasing them for me. I purchase very little of them for my husband though because he has no dietary problems (lucky nut that he is) like I do.

I find lots of deals like spaghetti squash at .89/lb, red/orange/yellow bell peppers for 1.99/lb, the green bell peppers go for .99/lb to 1.29/lb!

See, I find Tescos and all the other major supermarket chains far too expensive when it comes to Fruit and Veg. You should try going into a Lidl or Aldi if they're near you, the price difference is amazing. We have a Lidl right next to our local tesco, and we usually pop into Lidl first for the fruit and veg and then go into Tesco for the rest of our shop. Nearest Aldi is miles away, but I love their super 6 deals.

Our local Tesco has even stopped reducing the fruit and veg (of course all the high calorie sandwiches are reduced) and of course all the tasty treats like doughnuts or cakes (I'm so proud of myself for keeping away from the cadbury's mini nest cakes!) have deals on.

Yeah it's hard out there if you're on a diet.

i agree with the OP. supermarkets are set up to get you to buy more of what makes them the most money. as was mentioned earlier, the processed crap the fill the middle of their stores with. the stuff on the outskirts of the store, produce, fresh bread, deli, etc, is where the make less money due to spoilage. so they make you walk through the crap in the middle of the store to get to the good stuff and then back through it again on the way out!
as another post said, it's all about the marketing. not too different from a casino, really!!!
and i also like the posts about going local! farmer's markets are great options!

The corn is a cheap food thing is BS because 6 or less husks are 2 bucks
That's like 30 cents each, how cheap do you want them?

My grocery bill has not changed... unless I head to Fresh Market and get special cuts of meat or a new type of fish. 3/4 of my grocery list is fresh fruits and vegetables. It used to be that most of the list was prepared foods and junk. I thought it would end up being a lot more expensive, but it really is not.

When the farmer's markets and my garden get going, it will be even cheaper!

This makes me angry too! All we hear is how there is to many over weight people in America. Yet at the store you can get 2 bags of doritos for 5bucks or spend a lot more for fresh produce or anything healthy. I know I spend more since i shop healthy. But, I just keep thinking how worth it it really is to be more healthy and start trimming down.

The cheapest produce is always that which is in season -- because the supply is greater.

Another thing to consider -- processed food has a long shelf life. As do the components that go into most processed foods.

But fresh produce and meats have a limited shelf life, which means they cost more. Fresh fruits & veggie also require special shipping and handling, and are more easily damaged. Canned & frozen foods, not so much.

Supermarkets don't have much control over core pricing - they only control the sliver of profit they make on each item. If the government would subsidize fresh fruits & veggies -- that might do more than taxing snack food.

When given the choice between fresh and processed, I like to remind myself that processed food costs DO more -- you just pay for it later.

I really don't know why this confuses people. These are two completely different things. The supermarkets aren't the ones telling you that we're overweight.

You constantly hear that drugs are bad, but people will still sell you crack. Why? Because it isn't the crack dealers telling you that drugs are bad. Unrelated.

I find that if you compare something like chips to an apple, I am much fuller eating one serving of apple compared to one serving of chips. So in the long run, apples would be cheaper. I personally hit up my local grocery outlet store for fruit and veggies first. I bought 5lbs of apples for $1.99 and zucchini 2 for $1, minature peppers $2.99 for a 1lb(which is really good), 3lbs bananas for $2, and a huge container of capris tomatos for $1.99. I usually get my salads at Safeway because its cheaper for the size we buy. My husband has a nightly routine of eating a salad for dessert before bed. I search for sales and considering I have a veggie and fruit loving 4 year old its even more important for me to have healthy choices.
I do not think the supermarkets are against us. I find that if you buy fruits and veggies in season its alot healthier and cheaper. I honestly dont spend a ton of money on fruits and veggies. Plus I buy lean cuts of meat when they have big meat bonanzas, so i can store it in the freezer when it isnt on sale. I think that eating junk is more expensive actually because you go threw it so fast. I have a friend who buys so much junk food, and says they cant afford fruits and veggies. Yet she is out of food alot quicker than me because its harder to get full.

The genetically modified corn and soybeans, used as filler in almost all processed foods, labeled as high fructose corn syrup, citric acid and a myriad of other preservatives, are not the same as the husks of corn you buy to put on your barbecue.

Its not that im confused over this. I understand that supermarkets are there to make money. But in my opinion i believe its just cheaper to buy the junk food there for its easier to be overweight.

I have read somewhere that supermarket fruit and veg is around 60% higher in price than from a market,,,Supermarket shopping is all about psychology,, their wits against ours!! When I go shopping and have got what I went in for but feel myself wavering at the so called bargains I head out via the cat food aisle!

Just been shopping and could have purchased 10 doughnuts for £1, but 5 apples were £1.35. I went for the apples but still annoying.
