Why are people on this website if they are negative?

I could never think of any reason to not congratulate someone, even on a 0.5 pound loss!

Yet, so many people on this website are so negative to others, and just plain rude.

Aren't we all on here to help each other out, congratulate each other on every victory whether big or small?

Clearly, you join the website the same reason everyone else does - TO BE HEALTHY.

I just want to say that in my opinion, we should all start BEING NICE AND MOTIVATING OTHERS - not being rude.

Someone asks a silly question?
Whats with all the "your an idiot" " this is a stupid question" "you just want attention you know the answer" ????

COME ON! LIKE JUST GIVE A POLITE ANSWER IF YOU KNOW IT! THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH ASKING SIMPLE THINGS.

COME ON LETS JUST HELP EACH OTHER OuT AND ALL GET TO WHERE WE WANT TO BE!

Hey, it's just life- not everyone is in a good mood every day.
Most of the posts I see here are positive and supportive, of course there are some rude/negative ones - but that's just the same as in real life, not everyone has something positive to say each and every time.

And I'm not entirely sure that posting a shouty topic to say "BE NICE" really helps.... but I know it can feel good to get things out of your system so I hope you feel better now

Why is weight loss and fitness different than any other topic, like how to brew beer or how to change a car's oil or how to boil an egg? Each one of those has a few different variations, but fundamentally, there's a right and wrong way to do it. With weight loss and fitness, it seems that a shocking number of people have no idea what they're doing. Correcting them is actually a good deed; not negative. Encouraging these people to continue doing stupid or harmful things would be negative in my view.

    This.

I've always tried to be helpful. But skepticism aka the dreaded "negativity" has its place at times. Certainly, you can't SCREAM people into a positive attitude.

Can we change the name of "Motivation and Support" to "People Complaining About The Forums"?

Well said mate it is so true I have been on a life change now for just on 4 yrs i have fallen a total of 136 lbs or 62 kg. the First year i was too heavy to exercise so it has been a slow process also my naturopath has said slow and steady win the race. Had another set back for 7 month in 2010 that i was sick on and off. My health is getting better every month. This is the best thing i have done for me. I am still48 kg off my goal weight (( that i have set)) so long way to go but the friends that i have on MFP have helped me where i am today and every chance possible i give a positive comment which means i comment on 99.9% of my friends posts so i deleted people who are not on for the same reason we are here to help each other so if you are looking for a friend to life change with give me a message good luck in you quest my friend

Sadly, you're probably going to get slaughtered. I just ignore the negative posts and don't friend those people. I haven't had to unfriend anyone over it yet, but that's probably about the only thing that would make me delete someone.

i havent' been on MFP that long, but i too was kinda surprised at the amount of negative comments. i think the extremely negative people do it out of fear. they've reached (or getting close) to their goal, and then someone comes along and reminds them of their former selves--the self that they've worked so hard to get away from. so instead of responding from a place of understanding, they lash out. this journey isn't just about the physical--there are so many more mental parts that come into play. and more than the body, mind is WAY harder to change.

i sincerly believe that one of the unique things about being human is our ability to share our experiences. we go thru things in life not only for our own development, but so that one day, we can reach out to another person, say that you've been there, and this is what got you thru it.

perhaps, we just haven't evolved yet. *shrugs*

This is very insightful. Makes sense.

And on a physiological note, people on restricted calorie diets aren't known for being the most cheerful creatures, either.
