My husband and I just returned from an 8 day trip to Japan. We ate whatever we wanted and did not try to diet whatsoever. I dreaded the scale this morning, being the first day to weigh myself after our return home. To my surprise, I actually lost 1/2 lb. In Japan, it is very rare to see someone 50 lbs overweight. Obesity is almost a non-issue. Coming home to America and seeing all of the people in the airport was a real culture-shock in terms of diet and the way we treat (or mistreat) our bodies. I am not trying to say that Japan is superior to America, or anything like that...it was just a real eye-opener.

  • Yes, they eat so different then us. I'm asian and my whole family eat so differently then most. Most of my family members are very small and don't have an eating problem. I don't know what happen to me...lol. I try to eat lots of aisan foods and prepare them the same way, but I still don't lose weight.

    that's awesome!
I'm going to Cairo in two weeks for about half a month. It's likely I'm not going to have access to a scale .. and I don't think I'm really going to be focusing on that anyways. Do you have any tips to make sure I keep on track?? I'll probably be walking around a lot, so hopefully I can still get in my exercise!

I lived in Singapore for 5 years (and traveled throughout Asia) it was shocking for us to to return to the US and see the sizes of people. Sometimes when eating out in S'pore, the restaurant would warn, "caution we serve American size portions"! I think it has to do with how much Americans eat (in geneal), not what. I know that's what I'm trying to do here on MFP.
