Achy feet while exercising?

Whenever I excercise for 20 + minutes, my feet start to get really achy!! It doesnt matter if I am on the elliptical, treadmill or walking outside. It also happens in several different pairs of shoes that I own.
Just wondering if this happens to anyone else and if so, if you found a pair of shoes that has helped?

hi amanda i was actually talking to my doctor and a few trainers about this.. my feet kept getting achy & my toes would start going numb a little:grumble: ..they told me i have to drink more water:drinker: ..find shoes with arch support & the main one was stretch! they told me to go on any fitness website that has stretching techniques for the feet and try it out. they also said it would continue a little until i had less weight on them as well.:ohwell: i hope this helps!0

yup, my feet start to ache after a bit too, I can never drink enough water and I rarely stretch xD0

Hmm thats interesting.... I've been drinking my 8 cups a day usually, but I'll try stretching more. I'm sure it'll get better too as I lose weight

Also think about getting a better pair of shoes! Its worth it to find a REALLY GOOD pair. Try road runners if you have one near you. Shoes/water/stretching are the most important things!0

Perhaps consider looking at an insert for your arches. If you have high or low arches and are on your feet a lot, you could potentially develop some longer term issues. A few summers ago, I wore flat flip flops (which I know are terrible) and joined a bootcamp, where we had to jog on pavement (at my weight - not good for feet or joints). I ended up with plantar fasciitis and heel spurs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantar_fasciitis), which have taken an extremely long time to go away. It is common in those that are overweight or who spend a lot of time weight bearing. It started with my feet and arches feeling achy.

This. I used to be like the OP, pain the foot with exercise, and I didn't do anything about it until I overexerted myself once, and then couldn't walk for like a month and a half without excruciating pain. Turns out, I have a whole host of things "wrong" with my feet (no arch, extra bone, ligament stretched extra tight, etc.). Now, I wear an orthotic, custom fit for my particular foot, and am MUCH better. I still have to be careful with what I do, use ankle brace or tape myself when I do day hikes (8-10 miles), but at least I can do them.0 -
Mine is more of my arch. I have started streching which helps some. This past weekend we had to buy my husband some new boots and went to a RedWing store. They had they same machine as a podiatrist which shows what points on your feet you carry most of your weight. After suggesting I buy a $50 pair of insoles....I went to Walmart and bought a set of Dr Scholls which had the same type of support for a lot cheaper. First workout was yesterday and they seemed to help.0

amanda i'd recommend going to second sole in mayfield or rocky river, they are great! they will fit the perfect shoe for your foot! they will have you run around the store to do different tests to find what works best. otherwise i agree with everyone else- more stretching and water!0

If you are heavier, dr. scholls won't neccessarily support your foot and weight properly. This is also true of gel or soft fabric/plastic custom fit orthotics. Depending on weight and how much you are on your feet, if you are considering orthotics - go to a proper podiatrist and get them to fit you with a hard plastic custom fit.
Sigh.. I know much more than I want to about this!
Shoes for me - I have wider feet and have to say that Asics beat new balance or any of the other regular brand name running shoes any day.0 -
I had the same issue for a while and I finally went to a store in my area that is known for their running shoes. The guy that runs the store was amazingly knowledgable about sneakers and showed me how my old sneakers had zero arch support. He put me a decent pair of shoes and they made all the difference in the world. I didnt pay a lot for them and they fixed my arch issues. A good running store will watch you walk and fit you with a shoe that is appropriate for you. There is no one brand of shoe that is better for everyone. They all fit differently and you have to find what fits you the best. Give it a try.0

i would definitely look at getting inserts for your shoes through a podiatrist. both my dad and my sister have this problem and the arch supports have helped a lot.0

I have plantar fascitis and I have found that the walk fit insert from Bed Bath and Beyond really help. Also, it is counter intuitive, but some barefoot (not flip flop) time at home helps to strengthen my feet. I also soak in a foot soak. Cold water, epsom salts, and a little lavender baby wash (for a nice smell). This has helped me.0

Im Flat foot and have wide feet and mine ache and swell as well as my ankles and calves...I hate tennis shoes bc my feet feel smothered in them...

take 2 500 ml plastic pop (yes I'm from Canada) bottles, fill them with water and freeze them. Then when you are sitting down, take them and roll them under your arches. It helps to shape your feet and ices them at the same time. Otherwise try and wear the most supportive shoes you have all the time.0 -

If you can find a New Balance store near you, they have a machine that analyzes your feet and then they custom fit the shoe to you depending on what you want to do. Be prepared to spend 250 or more though... I bought some at ****'s sporting goods and I'm having the same problem.0

My feet go to sleep on the elliptical all the time but I cant feel them after awhile so it doesn't bother me. i dont know if thats normal or bad but I just keep goin! :ohwell:0

Since i started jogging I now have shin splints, kinda like achy feet just higher up0

Try Vibram five-fingers and/or barefoot if you're indoors. I have high arches and have the same issue with conventional shoes for anything high-impact.0

I have the same problem. I drink plenty of water and wear good shoes with insoles. Also, my ankles and calves start to hurt when I walk more than 20 minutes or so.0

I did Zumba for the first time the other day. Tem minutes in and my feet hurt so bad that I had to take my shoes off. My feet were so much better after I ditched the shoes and went barefoot. I think I'm going to look into getting some Vibram Five FIngers.

it could also be from a shortened tendon. I have super high arches-wear 4 inch heels and danced ballet for years which lead to this problem for me. Flex your foot and tape it at the arch. It helps to lengthen the tendon-that advice came from my podiatrist.
I use a tennis ball to massage my feet while I watch tv-roll your foot back and forth on the tennis ball-it really does help.0 -

I had the same problem! I went to Cabelas and bought walking/hiking shoes and no longer have that problem! Good luck to you!0
