why do people use protein powder?

    To help me get most of my protein for the day, plus... it's chocolate flavored.

    Yes it is

    You need to use milk with it. A friend of mine explained the science behind it all(whey is a by product of milk). For your body to absorb protein it needs carbs in a certain ratio, roughly 2.5 v 1. The milk gives you the protein, the nesquick gives you the simple carbs.

    another vote for this, i use true whey and it works out about 35p a serving! Impact whey is just as tasty but quite runny, just like flavoured milk. true whey is more like a Frijj shake. The milk proteins are rank they dont mix well and its like drinking milky sand!
    they do sample packs too so you can try out the flavours before buying a big pack, chocolate and choc mint are the best, vanilla is good for adding to other things like oatmeal, smoothies, frappucinos, but it can be a bit sickly on its own.
    Cookies & cream is like cake batter, nice for a change but a bit sweet for everyday.
    Strawberry / raspberry / banana are good with milk and a frozen banana.

    I use them to get my protein allowance in on days when i dont get enough from my meals, and also as a healthy chocolatey treat, there is not much else thats chocolate flavoured with no fat, carbs or sugar :-)

    Thats so cheap, thanks for all the info aswell, deffo gonna take a look here seeing as its payday before it all goes lol

  • Nutrilite Protein Powder is the best you can get as it has the PDCAAS score of 1* from WHO. 80% protein, 100% digestible. If you can find from someone near you it would be the best.

    I see nearly everyone on here uses protein powder. Why is this?

    You don't have to use it. I wonder if some people do just because they think drinking protein shakes goes hand in hand with weight loss. It doesn't. You can get all the protein your body needs from real food and save yourself some $. If for some reason you can't eat your protein, I suppose it's the next best thing.
  • I use maxitione sculptress diet protein shakes - caffeine free so can be taken anytime of day. They have CLA & Green Tea in them to help speed metabolism & lose weight. I I go to the gym in the morning a strawberry one is my breakfast.
    I use it as a meal replacement ie I had a bagel with scrambled eggs & salmon this morning so the shake is my lunch today then a healthy dinner. I also have the sculptress caramel crunch bars as well - again high in protein, cla & green tea.I sometimes have a bar in the afternoon or half a serving of chocolate sculptress diet just to curb afternoon cravings and give me energy.
    They are really filling & tasty.
    They are not cheap but if your not buying junk food I think it all evens out. If you register on the website they do regular deals ie 33% off and free delivery. You get a free shaked with your first order as well.

    Right now I'm using Body Fortress Whey Isolate. 30grams of protein for about 130 calories. I'm trying to run through it because the after taste is awwffffuullll :sick:

    I love the vanilla soy protein powder from The Fresh Market. I mix it with greek yogurt and some strawberries and it tastes JUST like cake batter. NO JOKE. I've done it with cocoa powder too and I feel like I'm eating brownie batter :blushing:

    For me, I don't like to take protein after workout and replace it with a meal contain high protein.
    bcoz I like everything in natural way. It is my personal opinion :)

    Its the ease of it. To really get benefits from protein into repairing your muscles post work out, you need to take it within the first 30minutes after your exercise.

    Personally by the time I shower and get hour its the guts of an hour. You could bring some chicken breast etc to the gym and eat them in the locker room post work out.

    Hello...wonder if I could join in this conversation by asking a potentially stupid question or two :embarassed:

    How do you determine how much protein you need?

    And also, if you eat a meal within 30 mins of completing your exercise is it therefore unnecessary to have protein powders, like even at a different time of day? So for example I saw someone say that they have them as snacks throughout the day.

    My typical day goes something like this:

    Weetabix crunchy bran, milk banana for breakfast
    2-3 hours later snack such as fat free yogurt and/or apple
    Lunch 2-3 hours later (Sometimes I run at lunch and so instead of above mid-morning snack I'll have a small handful almonds)
    Afternoon snack, usually a banana or red grapefruit 2-3hours later
    Gym workout 2-3 hours later
    Evening meal within 30 mins of gym (usually a balanced meal with either chicken or pork, veg/salad and potatoes)
    Evening snack 2 hours later, usually homemade banana bread or wholemeal toast with pure peanut butter - nothing added.

    I'd love to know if I'm missing something that will benefit me and my health :happy:

    I use protein powder because I'm a pescetarian, but I only eat fish twice a week. When I first started out with this diet change, I noticed rather quickly that I was not getting enough protein on my non-meat days and I was starting to feel the effects of that. If I wasn't a vegetarian, I wouldn't use any. One serving of fish in a day in addition to my regular diet is usually enough to put me over my requirements, so keep that in mind. I use Gensoy unflavored powder. It has the smallest amount of vitamin and mineral additives of any powder I've found so far (because I get plenty of those from my food), with the added benefit of having no added sugar or any other crap like that. If I really wanted, I could just add water, but that's pretty gross, so I usually add a drizzle of honey, some cinnamon, a dash of vanilla extract, and bit of peanut butter for added protein. I don't own a blender, so that's about as fancy as I get.

    People use protein powder for all the wrong reasons. The best reason to use is it is to give you a convenient, affordable source of protein. There are some unique benefits to protein powders but, in the end, it's an easy way to get protein.
    Exactly. Good protein powders can have something like <3g carbs, <3g fat and >25g of protein. Caloric efficient way of boosting protein intake. I have a shake every morning.

    A good protein can't have over 25g of protein per serving unless it's double scooped or the serving size is larger than normal. It's usually a gimmick employed by some companies to convince people that they have more protein per serving than other powders.

    I've been wondering this, too. I also wonder how protein shakes factor in a "clean" diet? How processed are they? How many other chemicals? For the person that said they can't get enough protein with food alone...maybe your goal is too high?

    My husband likes to have a protein shake for lunch (he uses Shakeology) but I wonder how healthy it actually is.

    Abandon the term "clean." It truly is a nonsensical word. Protein powders, regardless of chemicals or not, is one of the prime examples of why the word "clean" is stupid.

    If they say that then they're lying. Processing protein powder is quite extensive. All protein powders are heavily processed. This doesn't make it bad, though. People are on here don't understand that processed does not equate to bad. What equates to bad is too much of something that results in prolong nutrient deficiency.
    And yeah, it's pretty much just soya in it, so pretty 'clean'. (Not that clean eating is something I lie awake at night worrying about... )

    Protein powders probably are one of the cheapest sources of protein per dollar. For example, I get 46g of protein per dollar from my whey whereas if I bought chicken breast on sale here in Canada then it comes out to around 28-30g of protein per dollar. This is an astronomical difference in price.
