I know this has probably already been covered. How does one take measurements?

Do you mean, where on your body do you measure your waist? I'm sorry if this is too simplistic:

Waist: Wrap a tape measure around your middle at the level of your belly button (although I've also heard you should measure the thinnest part of your torso, or your "natural" waist?)
    :ohwell:

Hips: Measure your hip circumference at the level of the two bony prominences felt in the front of your hips. I guess guys wouldn't care this much about this?

Sorry, this turned out to be no help at all!

They have flexible or clothlike tape measures that are pretty easy to use. To get a really good measurement of your progress measure a few areas of your body...
    Neck, middle of neck
    Chest, just under pec muscle
Waist, smallest part of your midsection
Belly, around your belly, at belly button level
    Hips/butt, widest part
