Logging my food yesterday I was horrified to see how many calories were in my favourite micro mushroom rice. Don't get me wrong I never thought it was health food but at nearly 300 cals?! I won't be buying anymore of them, no matter how nice they taste :(

i was going to buy some last week at the grocery
i looked at the calories per serving and i could not believe such a small package of rice had so many calories

Not sure what brand you eat, but the Uncle Ben's Micro mushroom rice only has 200 calories for 1 portion (half a pack), which is the same amount of calories if you eat 1 portion of plain rice. All carbs have lots of calories, but rice has burns slower and longer, so you feel fuller for longer and the flavoured micro rices just taste a heck of a lot better! So don't give up on them! I like to cook them in a pan with some veggies to add bulk without calories, so you end up eating less rice.

Don't get me wrong I don't mind cooking rice. But these packets always came in handy for quick lunches and are a lot more tasty than plain rice! Ah well, no more it seems!

It's Tilda I buy/bought. To be fair those 300 cals are for the whole packet, I always used them as a lunch. Half a packet cuts it right down and bulking it out with veggies sounds yummy. Thanks for the idea :)

Yeah lots of pre packed flavored rice's (and pastas) have lots of (rather undesirable) extras in them. You can try making your own version by steaming the rice in a low salt broth/stock with spices and veg of your choice. You'll have more control over what's in it then, and it will probably lower the calories too.

I usuually stir fry half a pack of tilda brown rice with veg and fish or whathaveyou for dinner. It works well like that as you dont have to worry about where to store the rest while microwaving, just get the half you need out the pack and put the rest in the fridge for another time :)

rice is generally pretty high in calories
but you could always make your own microwave rice just get the normal kind
and microwave it for like 20 minutes or so
(it'll tell you on the pack) then i like to add frozen mixed veg, paprika and soy sauce
