OK fitness pals, I have a question that I thought of today:

Does sex count as cardio?? And if so, how many calories does one burn during a session?

Yes, this is a serious question.

    Wear a heart rate monitor next time. That's my best guess. Good question though!!

    I think the calculators wouldn't give the best answers on this because there could be a large variety in what you do. Your best bet would be a HRM, but, I don't think I could do that either. I'd be too busy laughing to get anywhere.:laugh:
  • Depends on the amount of energy and time ,you spend on it .

    I often asked myself the same question.....

    I don't have a heart rate monitor but thought maybe when I get one it would be good to use to track this. Then I thought - what could kill the mood more than me needed to grab my HRM? I'm sure my husband would love to "wait" just so I can track my calories burned. :wink: YEAH RIGHT!

    I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't personally think it would be appropriate to count burned calories while making love. And that is just MY opinion. But, if you want to keep up with things maybe use one of your regular exercises that makes you feel comprable to how you feel after doing "it". :laugh: I know for me that some times are more intense than others, so switch it up how your entering it to reflect it's intensity.

    Well thats just my opinion! Happy humping! :laugh:
  • well according to fitday... sexual intercourse taking moderate effort for 30 minutes would burn 41 calories.... interesting, lol

    I'm thinking your love life must be pretty lame because great sex is steamy and sweaty and full of cardio and definitely a GREAT calorie burner........if you get enough of it you really wouldn't need much other exercise other than strenght training to tone. Sex it up mama! :wink:
  • *grins* I love this question and I've been wondering the same thing. I suppose it would just depend on how much, you know, effort you put into it :tongue:

    Hahahaha I didn't even think about how much of a mood stopper this might be trying to figure out the cals during!!!! I was wondering more about an estimate to add to my exercise for the day... if, you know ...I do engage in this activity for the day, I was also wondering if it was exercise enough to even add to my daily exercise log.

    also thx everyone for the replies, interesting to see that some of these calorie calculators have a sexual intercourse category :laugh: :blushing: :blushing:

    I'd have been "Twiggy" if it burned anything at all, so I knew without even checking it out that it DOESN'T burn hardly any calories! :laugh: :sad:

    Sexual intercourse has long been known as a super healthy activity with many benefits. One of these benefits is weight loss. In a 30 minute session of lovemaking you can burn anywhere between 80 to 200 calories (depending on how rigorous the session, positions used, among other factors).

    If you make love 3 times a week, you can burn 7,500 calorie annually which is the equivalent of what you would achieve if you jog for 75 miles! Imagine that!

    Indeed, sex may be the ultimate diet supplement as it not only burns calories but also:

    1. Improves cardiovascular fitness due to your heavy breathing and increased heart rate during lovemaking.

    2. Tones the muscles, including several muscle groups that rarely come into play during your regular routine.

    3. Reduces stress which is know to contribute to weight gain especially around the abdominals. Reducing stress can also help reduce the risk of heart diseases and other illnesses.

    4. Helps you sleep better. Studies show that people who sleep better than others tend to lose weight faster.

    All in all, going on a sex diet is a very good idea. Of course, you can't stay in bed all day long. You do need to do regular workouts and to watch your nutrition. However, as lovemaking is a lot of fun and helps to keep the flames of desire running between you and your mate, it's a good idea to make it part of your routine.

    Having sex can help you lose weight and become even more sexy.

    I've always said things that are part of your day to day life (laundry, vacuuming, showering, organizing, cooking, etc.) should not could as "exercise". That's just my opinion. Of course, if some particular day you do one of those activities in excess (for example you clean out your grandmother's basement moving heavy boxes up and down stairs for an entire day) then by all means... count it! :wink: I like to be conservative with my exercise, and generous with what I enter for portion sizes just to be sure I'm being more than accurate.

    So, if sex is what you're body is used to on a regular basis then CHEERS to you! :drinker: :laugh: and I wouldn't count it. Of course, if there's a special occasion, and it's a little bit more "in excess" than normal, then maybe you'd want to count it :love: ... and share your secrets with your MFP friends :laugh:

    I have a Polar F6-LOVE IT! Definitely worth the investment. I picked it based on the threads I read in the forums here :)
  • That is so funny! Great question. I've actually tried logging it before.....as Aerobics:laugh:

    I have actually seen a book, can't remeber the name of it now, but I'm sure google can tell you, that demonstrates ways to turn sex into exercise, and some of the positions looks like they could definitely spice things up a bit! So I'm going to say yes, and you know if you're pushing yourself :)

    FOUND THIS ON DISABLEDWORLD.COM

    Possible Side Effects of Good Sex

    The first indication that sex was a positive experience will be a buzzing in the pelvic area and a clear complexion. If sex was really terrific, you feel dangerously drained, as though your body had been connected to a large milking machine for several days...

    Swooning = 6 calories
    Palpitations = 10 calories
    Shortness of breath = 5 calories
    Perspiring = 8 calories

    Possible Side Effects of Bad Sex
    A less=than=sunny desposition = 1 calorie

    Recovering from sex
    Un entwining = 3 calories
    Regaining motor control of pevis (After especially tiring sex, you may feel numb from below the waist to the opposite wall. The result will be an inability to walk [put one foot in front of the other], which will seriously impair your chances of going to the bathroom or getting some juice.) = 7 calories
    Standing up = 9 calories
    Getting some juice = 11 calories

    Calories burned After sexual intercourse
    (Classic behavior for shiftiness men who believe they’ve done their job and are now entilted to a rest. This “rest” may include snoring.) = 18 calories

    During intercourse
    (Women find this to be a subtle, yet direct way of suggesting dissatisfaction.) = 32 calories
    During foreplay (Indicates either an advance case of fatigue or a serious lack of interest.) = 12 calories
    Avoiding the wet spot = 80 calories

    Trying Again
    If the woman is ready = 5 calories
    If the man is not = 156 calories

    The Act of Insertion
    Man is ready (same vice versa) = 1/4 calories
    If the woman is not ready for sex (same vice versa) = 274 calories

    Satisfying Partner Sexually (penis size)
    Most experts agree that penis size means nothing. In those rare instances where a man has a small member, he may have to compensate by working slightly harder. whereas a man with a really large organ might not have to work as hard.

    Normal size penis = 22 calories
    Oversize = 15 calories
    Tremendous = 8 calories
    Teensy weensy = 163 calories

    Multiple Orgasms

    For women:
    2 = 14 calories
    5 = 30 calories
    8 = 47 calories

As the number increases she may begin to experience a form of “reduced sanity” that will temporarily interfere with her ability to make the beds and cook supper.)

    For Men:
    2 = 21 calories
    3 = 39 calories
    4 = 57 calories
    (Many men can enjoy up to 4 orgasms in an hour with little discomfort except for the slight ringing in the ears. However, a man who tries to achieve more than 10 orgasms within that same period is flirting with irreversible brain damage.)

    Seriously though it has been estimated that having sex for a half hour burns approximately 150 to 200 calories and sometimes maybe as high as 350 calories if you are really active in bed.

    The calories burned during sex is roughly the equivalent of fast walking, jogging, or weight lifting for around thirty minutes.

    From what I've read, sex doesn't burn enough calories to make it worth ...... Well, I wouldn't put 30 strenuous minutes into that instead of the treadmill IF you are looking for calories burned. Keep sex for .... um, relaxation? LOL :laugh: Still a great stress reliever, which improves overall health!! :drinker:
