I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything that Soy Milk is bad for men or if that is just a myth

Replies

  • Myth.
But, if you're uber-concerned about it, you can try almond milk, oat milk, hemp milk, rice milk...
    Lots of options.

Bad how? My husband has been drinking it with his breakfast for years now -- we haven't seen any issues. In fact he says he feels better since he stopped drinking regular milk.

i don't think so... i've heard rumors about estrogen in it and stuff but weight lifting increases testosterone production so it shouldn't be a big deal. I drink it because humans aren't made to process another mammals milk. we are mammals and have our own milk.

I've only heard that if you have an underactive Thyroid that uncooked soy can worsen things.

So why not drink breast milk?
  • I have heard that Soy can affect people sensitive to oestrogen - women with "plumbing" problems for instance. My nephew has lactose allergies and was on soy milk and products for years. He is now 8 yrs old and already developing pubic hair, which doctors attributed to a high soy diet. He has switched to rice milk products.

Its a bit too sweet! :embarassed: Dont ask how I know!

The jury's still out, it's not a myth, it's a hypothesis put forth by doctors and research scientists. There is a lot of very solid science behind it; BUT ; the science hasn't yet been backed up by enough data to provide any conclusive results. There are multiple reasons for this. 1) The soy industry is a giant consortium of very wealthy companies, their lobbying power is tremendous, this will be a huge roadblock to any negative studies; and 2) soy contains things that can cause long term damage to the human body. Because of the fact that we are talking about "damage after decades" type damage, and we have just (a few years ago) begun to really dig into the product deeply, and thus there isn't enough data yet to come to a conclusion.

I will say this, the proposed side effects to children and men is scary, even the dangers posed to woman. Whether these actually turn into true side effects or just red herrings, that's up to the research scientists to decide. For now, I don't touch the stuff any more than I have to. There's plenty of other great stuff out there that gives you everything soy gives you without all the phytoestrogens and isoflavonoids which could, quite possibly (if the reports prove out mind you), be screwing up human thyroids.

Please note while there is much about soy we don't know, some of the downfalls of soy are based around unfermented soy products only (the majority of soy products in the US are unfermented) and it's phytic acid.

So with all that said, do your research, and ask yourself if it's worth it, it's for you to judge. For some the risks outweigh the benefits, for others, they can live with the possible problems.

oh, and I posted this a few months back. It's a good read. It was sparked by a segment of the Biggest Loser, but it has a lot of (still relevant) info on soy products.

I love soy products. My husband's doctor told him to use it in place of dairy, for his high cholesterol.
