On the wagon, off the wagon, back on the wagon?

Hi all,
I thought I'd re-introduce myself. I've used MFP off and on for at least 2-3 years now. I always manage to lose a little bit of weight and then get busy/stressed/life takes over and I stop logging, which gradually turns into not watching what I'm eating, which inevitably leads to realizing 3 months later that I've regained all the weight that I'd previously lost.
So, I'm back on the wagon again! I'm planning a summer wedding next year and I want to lose 25-30 pounds by end of August so that I can start dress shopping and be able to look at normal sized wedding dresses (even then, I'm unlikely to fit the sample size that they will carry). One way or another, I really do not want to be a plus sized bride!
More importantly, I want to be healthy and I want to stop fat-shaming myself and yo-yo dieting. If all I lose is 30 pounds but I keep it off for 20 years, that would be way more a victory than getting thin temporarily and not being able to maintain the weight loss. So, I want to start over -- I want to forget that I've tried losing weight 20 times before and teach myself new habits about food, exercise and balance.
I'd love some support (and to support all of you), so feel free to friend me if you choose. Thanks for reading!

Good luck- I know what you mean, I have lost the same 5 or 10 pounds so many times, it is ridiculous. If I had kept it off, losing those 5 pounds so many times would have gotten me to my goal weight. :explode: So, I am hoping that logging in every day (I have done 45 days now) will train me to judge portion sizes and calories better, so that, going forward, I really can change my habits. So, I wish you luck, and a happy marriage. :flowerforyou: And, if the wedding is next year, you have plenty of time to look however you want. To take off the pressure of getting to a 25 to 30 pound loss by August, ask the shop how much time they need to order and alter a dress, maybe you could try dresses closer to the wedding than you thought. Maybe if you put a picture of a wedding dress you like in the kitchen, it will remind you to get out of there, and go walk! :bigsmile:0

Thanks Pat! Actually, I've done exactly that -- there's a Vera Wang dress that I am in love with and I have a picture of it in my office to remind me why I really don't need to eat that cookie or donut that's offered.
I think starting to dress shop in September, about 10 months away seems to give me lots of time. I think it'll take some time once I start shopping to find what I like (since I can't afford the Vera Wang runway dress!) and I eat under stress so I don't want to put too much pressure on myself to have to keep losing weight going into the wedding or I think I'll sabotage my plans. I think by the end of the summer/early fall I'll order in whatever size I am then and just hope that I keep losing weight. I'm told it's fairly straight forward to alter dresses in (not so easy if you gain weight!).
But thanks for the support, I appreciate it!0 -
Good luck....I have lost 72 lbs in the past and kept it off for years...only to end up on lots of meds and I gained oodles of weight. Now I am back at square one...I have more than 30 lbs to lose and it is proving to be really hard this time. I hope we all find our way to a healthier life.0

I'm so sorry! That must be so frustrating given that you had done such a good job at maintaining your weight. Best of luck getting the weight off!0 -

Take your position and stay with it. Easy to say of course. But training for life make sense. When you start treating food as medicine it will help you and not hurt you. Too much medicine is not so good. The right amount is what you need. Good luck.0 -
I know what you mean. For years my weight would go up and I never felt like I got where I wanted to be until recently. Support of others is so very necessary0

I am right there with you, mom just told me last time I talked to her that I am a "yo-yo" (thanks mom). It's true though. I lost 20 plus pounds about 10 years ago on Atkins. It was a very successful "diet" but the only thing I maintained from it was a new love of high fat foods and coffee with cream and sugar!! Not going that route again, like you it is very hard to say no to treats. i teach kindergarten and constantly battle an urge to eat the sweet treats from children and those left in the lounge for us. (Today someone left TWINKIES in the lounge.) Anyway, good luck with the wedding plans. I think you are wise to set September as a time to order your dress--it gives you several months to lose a good chunk of weight, but it is not so far away that you can fool yourself into thinking "I'll start tomorrow..." I officially jumped back on the wagon 3 weeks ago, and welcome you joining me here.0
