Why is my sodium goal set so high??

My daily goal for sodium is set as 2,500! And though I've only been recording what I've been eating for three days, I have been way under each day, which I was totally not expecting.. :noway: I've been eating incredibly unhealthily these three days!! ((Finals week does that to my diet))

Should I really aim for around 2,500?? Or do they just mean I should not go over that?

I would appreciate any tips

2,500 is the recommended amount daily for an adult (according to MFP). I love salt, so thats a hard goal for me lol.
By all means change it if you're looking for a low sodium diet, but theres no need to really unless you have heart problems.

I also come in way under the allowance but I basically ignore it.

2,500 was the old amount set by the American Heart Association (actually I think their goal was 2,400 but who's arguing). That amount is too high and not what the AHA recommends any longer. The new amount is no more than 2,300 with 1,500 recommended.

If you are in a high risk group then you should aim for the 1,500 amount or lower to reduce your risk of developing HBP.

    Thank you, everyone!!

I changed it to 1,500 because there are heart problems in my family.. Can't hurt to be safe, right?

I like salt too! It really brings out the flavor in foods. And I always thought I ate way too much salt!! That's why I was so surprised that I was so far below their goal.. I have barely over 1000 for today. I just started this yesterday, so maybe it's just today? I don't know.. Lol

Your spaghetti would have some. Sometimes people don't enter it into the database. You might not worry about sodium and track to see if you are getting any protien and fiber etc. I stop tracking what I'm not worried about so I can see more info

Some goals are a max and some are a min. Sodium is one of the ones that's intended as a max, i.e. at most 2300.

Iirc the absolute minimum for sodium is far, far lower than that -- more like 500.
