Facial Creams and Healthy Skin?

Hey guys, got a question for those who like to pamper themselves!
A bit of a random question here I know, but I was wondering if it's time for me to start using light anti-aging creams. I'm 23, and I do have faint smile lines at my eyes. Now I know 23 is young, and I do moisturise a lot anyway, but my mother once said that mid-twenties is where you can catch wrinkles before they develop, and therefore you can slow their formation. She started using anti-wrinkle creams when she was 25, and to be honest, her skin is in very good condition. She's 50 now but still looks early 40s. My gran was the one that told her this, and my gran also looks a lot younger than her true age.
If any of you think I should start using a specialised cream, what ones do you recommend? I don't think a heavy anti-wrinkle cream is needed just yet, maybe something for younger skin with fine lines? I honestly have no idea. Any help would be appreciated! :flowerforyou:

my mother doesnt wear makeup or use creams etc at all and everyone claims shes 30something (shes 53). its probably mostly genetic. about the creams though idk lol0

I akways reccommend jojoba oil0

The best thing you can do for youthful skin is stay out of the tanning bed/too much sun.0

It is important to use creams & sunscreen protection. I've been using Mary Kay for years, by the way I'm also a consultant, if you need anything, message me.0

I'm not sure you need any anti-wrinkle creams yet (I'm talking about the ones with Retin A). You should use a good moisturizer with SPF daily under your make-up. Clinique is good for young skin, and not very expensive.0

What type of facials are you getting?0

Thanks guys! I never go to tanning salons, I'm a redhead so I don't suit a tan. I don't really do facials either, I use the occasional face mask but nothing fancy.
Mary Kay and Clinique sound interesting, I'll give them a look!0 -

My facialist told me about it...You will see a video it was on the View and was in NY Times and many magazines!0 -
You're never too young to start preventative measures as far as lines and wrinkles go. Although a lot of it does have to do with genetics it doesn't hurt to use the creams.0

As a former esthetician I can offer some advice...you are right you don't need an anti-wrinkle yet but you could start with hydrating creams. At your age the lines are probably more due to dehydration rather than actual wrinkles. And definitely start with a light hydrating eye cream, morning and night. Drugstores have some good ones now that are reasonably priced. I would also suggest starting to exfoliate your face 1-2 times a week, to get rid of the dead skin cells. This also helps your skin absorb the creams better.0

Drink plenty of water.....It will keep your skin hydrated.....I take 1 vit. A tab everyday.....Also if you smoke stop!
It suckes all the Vit. E. right out of your skin....Causing it to dry out....Then you get wrinkles0 -
Oh I see, thank you so much for the advice! I'll start right away! :flowerforyou:0

Moisturizer and sunblock is key. I take skin care seriously since I'm bald. I use Clinique's 3-step process.0

The BEST anti-wrinkle cream you can use is sunscreen! Wear a daily moisturizer with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from age spots and wrinkles. Avon has a line of anti-aging regimens that are designed for every age group, even 20's. It is lighter, not a heavy cream like an older woman would use. Whatever you use, just make sure it has SPF, or if it doesn't, find a good one for your face and use it in addition to your regular moisturizer.0

I'm always a bit torn on skin treatments. On the one hand your skin is waterproof so all the claims that they really soak in aren't really true. Most of them just seem to fluff out your top layer of skin making it look better but thats only temporary.
Keeping the wrinkles at bay is always better. As people have said, use a sunscreen to protect from UV rays, and drink water. Also try not so pull the skin on your face and neck as it doesn't have the same elasticity as the rest of your body (I'm a sod for rubbing my eyes and they are my worst bit). Its basically the thinner the skin the less it stretches (which is why neck, eyes, elbows and knees are the biggest age giveaway normally).
Having said that, I've been using Bio-Oil for the last month and my neck seems a lot better and the results last longer. Its supposed to be used twice a day for three months, but I keep forgetting, but still getting good results.0 -
Thank you everyone! I've invested in a face cream with SPF 20, can't find a 30 one for some reason... it's from Avon. I have to be careful not to use it too close to my eyes, it stings them haha. But otherwise, it makes my skin look more even-toned. I'll keep using this and see what happens! :laugh:0

My mum is blessed with young looks at 54 years old and has always done face exercises and moisturised day and night with a good cleanser.
I have a good complexion and I'm 33...... I use Burts Bee's Citrus scrub for my face and no7 beautiful skin range from Boots the daily moisturiser and cleanser. though I'm in the UK, dunno what country you're from.0 -
I have started using A'Kin Cellular Radience serum at night instead of a heavy night moisturiser. I love it!
I am 29, have combination skin that is super sensitive (yet not at all dry). This oil, which is rosehip oil mixed with some other oils, is really light, sinks right in and my skin is absolutely loving it.
I am a big believer in natural is better, largely beause I have always had sensitive skin that stings if I use too harsh a chemical on it, like those turbo anti aging creams lol!0 -
Best thing is to use sunscreen. That will help with dark spots developing.
Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about wrinkles. As far as I know, there aren't any topical creams that can permanently restore the skins elasticity (which is why you get wrinkles). Any anti-wrinkle creams just moisturize the skin so it looks more plump. Moisturised skin will always look better than dehydrated skin.
I recommend moving to a more natural way of cleansing your skin. I use the oil cleansing method and LOVE it. my skin has never looked better and i dont have any dry patches any more. it can also help with oily skin. All you need is an oil of your choice (i use olive oil because i already have it and its relatively inexpensive) and castor oil if you feel you need it (i dont get it because nobody sells it in the UK)

if you really want to correct the look of wrinkles when theyre more pronounced, you can always try botox or fillers when you get older. i know people have mixed opinions on them, but i think as long as you don't get too much done it can really make you look younger.
TL;DR: moisturize your skin to make it look better and protect it with SPF. there isnt more you can do besides that, really.0 -
Thank you very much! I am in the UK, so I may start trying Boot's stuff once I'm through with this Avon cream.
Oil treatments sound good as well... I may usee rice bran oil for that, that's the oil found in many Japanese skin treatments, and it was even used by the Geisha community.0 -
