What does 'bump' mean?

I see this term being used quite a lot on these boards but what does it mean? I assume its American or something as i dont think its a term we use here in the UK.

it's a way to 1) keep the thread active so more people see it, or 2) if you are interested in going back to the thread (ie: there's recipes you want) by bumping (making a comment) it puts it in your "My Topics" so you can easily retrieve it when you want to view it again, avoids having to do a search.0
