Getting the most out of your HRM...VO2max estimator

I've seen a lot of posts recently about really high burns logged, some with a HRM and some without. Here's a link to a VO2max estimator that can be done without much endurance testing data:

VO2max is the measure of oxygen exchanged at your maximum cardiovascular effort. Getting VO2max tested involves being hooked up to a mask that monitors respiration while amping up the cardiovascular intensity to a maximum. This is cumbersome, expensive, and can be dangerous for some people so most of us use some table or formula to estimate VO2max based on known or easily measurable parameters.
Why is this important for this forum??? The reliability of the calories burned on your HRM depends on entering a good estimate for VO2max. Heart Rate itself is not actually directly related to calories burned, despite overwhelming popular belief- HR is just a heck of a lot easier to measure than respiration. Oxygen exchange is truly related to calories burned. So, the HR monitor companies have spent a ton of time and money developing (proprietary) algorithms to relate Heart Rate and Calories Burned. The link between the two is VO2max. The VO2max correlates an amount of respiration to a maximum effort (max HR).
So...bottom line- try to get a good estimate for your VO2max, or your HRM can't calculate calories accurately.

Hmm...I'm not sure what you mean..you put in your height, weight and gender, and then answer the three radio button questions- how much activity you get, how fast you can do one mile and how fast you can do 3 miles, and then click "Analyse" and nothing comes up?
I'm not sure what to do about it, I tried the link again and it works for me...0 -
I filled it all out - nothing. Refresh page, try again - nothing. May be our security measures on the computer system - I will forward the link to my personal email and try later.
Thanks for sharing!!0 -

Oooh...OK I tried the link in my various browsers, and it seems to not work in Internet Explorer. Works fine in Chrome, Firefox, and thanks to susieQ I assume it works in safari. I assume that's a problem in the website coding. I'm going to update my original post with this info. Sorry to anyone who can't use the calculator! :ohwell:
Edit...Or I can't edit the original post. Boooo...!0 -
