Exercising

Lately I've been having trouble riding my stationary bike for 30 minutes straight. I have asthma and I can't catch my breath so I've been cutting the session in to two 15 minute intervals. Is that still considered 30 minutes a day or does it mess up the metabolism? I'm trying really hard but it scares me when I can't catch my breath, plus I've only been using the bike for two weeks now so maybe I just need to get my stamina up. Any suggestions?

    I'm no expert, but I believe I've read that dividing your workout is good for weight loss, but if you don't do at least 20 minutes at a time, you're not getting the benefits to your cardiovascular system. If you haven't ever done cardio before, I'd say take it more easy. You should be able to talk while you work out, but not sing.

    Well, first of all, kudos to you for not letting asthma get in your way of wanting to lose weight. I think that is awesome.

    Second, in my opinion, and again, this is ONLY my opinion, from what I have read, heard, & seen, ANY exercise you add to your day is better than NO exercise at all. Since you've just started, you SHOULD take it a little easy being you have asthma. Have you spoken to your dr. about this? While your intentions to get healthy and lose weight are admirable, you don't want to jeopardize yourself where your other health concerns may be more important. You know what I mean? Anyway, I still think you're a winner for even thnking about exercising with asthma. My son had juvenille asthma...it can be horrifying.

    Great job. keep up the good work.

    I don't know about your asthma case but my sister-in-law was diagnosed with it then another Doctor put her on the South Beach diet and her breathing has gotten better.

    Thank you for posting and putting my workout in persespective.

    My trainer told me 3 20 min sessions spread out thru the day are great!

    Now.....you do need to get your heart rate up, and then give your self 3-5 min cool down at the end........

    How much you want to bet you will increase your capabilities the more you do it.

    Thanks everyone for the warm and encouraging feedback!! I have noticed in the last few days I have not been as tired after doing 10 mins so I think I'm going to try 15. If I can't catch my breath, then I will try doing 3 ten minute workouts a day. Thanks again for all the kind words.:heart:

    are you using your albuterol before you work out? Try using your albuteral inhaler about 15 minutes before you work out and you might notice a difference in you breathing during your workout. I also use pursed-lip breathing and drink small amounts of water during the workout which makes my breathing easier.
