Was I too mean?

I have a friend that just started selling the Body By Vi program, and she spends ALLLLLL of her time on facebook spamming all of us. I've been quiet for a while, but today I posted a picture from instragram of me pretending to sleep at my desk, and she instantly had to sound off on my photo.

Friend that sells BBV: YOU should join me in the Body By Vi 90 day Challenge....you will have a lot more energy, and get healthy at the same time....ohhhh and you will lose weight to!!! pm me to lean more,or just go to my fb page...:)

Me: No thanks, (insert name here). I'm not a believer in the Body By Vi program. Not that it doesn't get results, but long term I'm not a fan. It's very difficult for people to go from eating the protein shakes to eating "regular" meals again and maintain the loss. I often use protein shakes as my lunch, just because I don't necessarily want or need a big meal, but might need something in between meals. I've lost 62 pounds without Body by Vi just by eating right and controlling portions and working out. I don't think my lack of energy has anything to do with diet - it's the fact that in the last three nights I've maybe collectively had about 7 hours of sleep. So thanks, but I'll skip it.

I now feel a little bad, just because I hate to hurt people's feelings, but at the same time I am tired of her spamming my wall. I've considered removing her as a fb friend, but I want to give her some time to... how shall I say it..... pull her head out of her butt and realize that spamming all your friends telling them they need to lose weight is not the best idea.

Thoughts?

Also, minor rant - if you are going to try to sell me something, USE SPELL CHECK.

    Nope!!

I think you were spot on. Friends don't spam friends with this stuff. It's ok to talk about "hey i'm going to try selling such and such" in some conversation and then let it go. If there is interest, well then fine ok we'll talk more.

    You did fine IMO.

If you could see all the debates and stuff that fly back and forth on my FB page between me and my sister, what you said to your friend is TAME in comparison!

You don't have to unfriend her if you really don't want to. Just block her from your page and you will never have to see her spam again.

I think you were in line. I have a fb friend that sells it too, and that he is CONSTANTLY putting up that stuff and trying to get people to use/sell it. From my research, it doesn't even seem to be that great of a product, so that just annoys me!

Congrats on your weight loss doing it in a very healthy way!!

If she is really my friend, would she post on my wall unsolicited weight loss advice when I'm actually in a healthy body weight category and have not complained about weight or even mentioned my weight loss on facebook before?

I guess I don't feel that I did anything more inappropriate than she did. Maybe I'm wrong.

I can't stand FB. Thats why I don't do it...... The bands that want free advertising... The people that want you to know everytime they burp or fart..... The time it takes.... The High School Popularity contest.. The chicks that have to put boobie pictures.. The competition.... Its kinda too distracting for me, and gave me stress before, when I tried. ....And stuff like what you had there... Respectfully No Thank you... Oooh plus, its the privacy issue. Even thou you have some privacy options... Actually nothings private. Everything you do, say, all your pics, there all there for eveyone to see. Even to your current or future employers. Is there anything private anymore? I wonder.... The only reason why Im on MFP and slightly social networking is because I need the tools here. Which Im not even using tools because Im using the Body Media Fit Bodybugg now, with the integrated food diary... Heee. I have to admit, some of these topics on the boards can be pretty fun. :)

I don't think you were too harsh.... Nothing to worry about.

That's the problem with these MLM (multi-level marketing) scams. They turn your friends into pushy sales people. Not your fault at all.

And then all of a sudden whatever drink their pushing becomes a protected class of citizen that you're not allowed to criticize. If I don't like cauliflower no one cares, no one raises a stink. But say you don't like Body By Vi or Shakeology and suddenly you're attacking someone and their beliefs.

Don't get sucked in. Your friend decided to use your relationship as a for-profit venture. Not you.

Goodness no! You were much nicer than deserved.

I have a friend selling JuicePlus+ and she does the same thing and I love her to death, which is the only thing keeping me from defriending her. But the spam and the trying to sell it to people on my page who she doesn't know and ... well, you know! is ridiculous.

Someone actually did say something about it to her and she whined and a bunch of people told her to ignore the person, so nothing changed.

No. I have a FB friend (a girl I used to work with) who has started selling some exercise program, and all of her FB posts turned into advertising for that. I minimized her posts so I no longer see any of them. I haven't gotten a PM from her trying to sell me a course or anything, but it would be wayyy annoying. If they're going to be selling things like that they should set up a business FB page and keep their personal one for posting about their personal lives!

I've noticed with my JuicePlus friend that pretty much everything she posts about it is straight out of the company's guidebook or something. She uses specific phrases and words for it and I started noticing that her friends who also sell it use all the same phrases and words, so they're like little JuicePlus robots.

I mean, at least use your own words!!!

Maybe! I have two that sell it, but one, while she posts about it a lot, is not overly pushy. I did actually order a sample from her a while back. However my husband uses higher quality stuff, so I just either steal from him or abuse our Herbalife shake bar locally. This girl just started, though, and she's already offended a bunch of people. She sent a bulk message, too, and instantly someone replied, offended that she was saying that she needed to lose weight. I thought maybe that would be what she needed to realize what she was doing, but apparently not.

I'm not the I'm-proud-that-I-lost-weight-and-gonna-hit-you-over-the-head-with-it type, so I really never mention it on facebook. Plus, like I said, I use it for business a lot. My clients don't want to hear about my weight loss journey.... they want to know I got them a good deal on a house. So I use MFP for my weight loss discussion/rants/tracking, and that's it.

I completely agree! Any true friend of mine would never post something about trying some new weight loss product on my facebook wall. Its just plain rude...whether I am trying to lose weight or not. SHE should have pm'd you if she wanted to tell you about it. So no, you were not mean in your reply and in fact way nicer than I would have been.

I think your response was great, it was factual, right? If someone wants to post something on their own fb account about something that they are a sales represtative for, I think that's fine because as their friend you have the option of blocking their notificaitons. However, when they start posting it on your wall that's another thing all together, it's rather imposing. She spoke her truth and sent you her sales pitch, you in turn spoke your truth, I see nothing wrong in that.

I have the same problem from an aunt who sells Avon - it gets annoying. I have just learned to ignore her. It isn't always easy, but since she is my aunt, I feel I can't be "mean" about it. It does get annoying that all of our presents anymore are Avon stuff. Just because she sells it, doesn't mean everyone likes it. I do order from her when I want something, but that doesn't mean I want something all the time.
