I have been Hypo for two and a half years. Right now my levels are all off kilter, but for me going the low-carb route worked. It took me about 13 months to loose the weight I have lost and I have been doing low-carb since July. I know many don't agree with it, but for me, it has worked.
Good luck!

My doctor just re-nailed it in my head that I need to fully convert to the low carb (atkins or south beach type) diet...0 -
are you on medication ?0

I'm hypo... been on the same dosage for years even through pregnancy it didn't change! I've been losing an average of a lb a week. So, seems like things are working normally! I try to eat a lot of protein (not necessarily low carb).0
-
Me Me me! Low carb is the only thing that worked for me!!!!! I'm on 137 mcg of sybthroid. And I have lost 42 lbs.0

I didn't even begin to lose weight no matter how hard I worked out until I got my proper medication dosage worked out. Now it's nothing special, just working out regularly (3 times a week) and using MFP to track my calories. I've lost 20 lbs since february.0

Yes I am since 20 years, it seems I have plateaued after losing 22 lbs, now since 3 week I am stucjk no matter how much I train and cycle, the weight is the same, but I did loose inches0

Hypo + PCOS = low carb. Now that my meds are stable (and I got a 2nd one added on), I'm able to lose weight.0

i am hypo (hashimoto's) and pcos
i eat high protein and low carb, it really made the difference. if you do eat carbs eat only complex and gluten free.
also VERY important.... get a good endocrinologist!! one that aims for the 'ideal' thyroid levels, not just within normal range. i am now at .5 TSH and it makes a huge difference.0 -
I was diagnosed May 2010. Since then I have lost whatever is on the ticker there. I plateaued for about a year after an initial loss, then gained back 25 and had the get my meds adjusted.
Back on track using Body by Vi/Visalus. 21.2 lbs since March 5.0 -

I am curious about the connection between low carb and hypothyroidism?!0 -
Mine was removed but my meds leave me with the same symptoms. I don't lose weight so much. It is a struggle. I lost 3 whole pounds last month.0

I am hypothyroid for about 10 years, it's always been a struggle for me to keep my weight I have always had to work extra had just to move things around. I found a book recently that was called the Thyroid Diet, it's not about a diet it's more of an eductational book of your thryoid, lately my weigt increased a lot, and its been very hard to keep it down. But from what I read in that book, people w/ Thyroid issue do better w/ low card diets. it's a very informational book. I started getting back on track in january and it only seems now things are starting to move very slow but they are moving...feel free to add me for motiviation.,,I totally relate to the frustrations of the hypothrhyod..good luck!!0

There is a lot of good information and knowledgeable people on there. :drinker:0 -
I was diganosed a couple of years ago. Mine comes with high levels of stress and poor diet and exercise and goes with good diet and exercise (which controls my stress).
Look at your blood type too, I am an O negitive with O's commonly known to have problems with thyroid levels. I follow the blood type diet for O's which is low in carbs high in protein. Although I can eat brown rice, spelt flour, ezekeil bread products (because they are grains which have been allowed to germinate which results in a higher protein product)
If mine gets really bad I control mine through medication (thyroxine) this is when I eat refined food and stress out as I do with study and work etc.
I try not take the medication and am learning to control my thyroid hormones naturally. The body does like all those chemical over a long period of time.0 -
I also am hypothyroid, but since birth. I was actually born without a thyroid. I have never had a big problem with my weight unless something is wonky with my levels. Which usually is somewhat self inflicted if i am not being consistent in taking my medication. At this point I am on 100 mcg of synthroid and seem to be doing well on it. I have put on a couple lbs i need to lose so hopefully my thyroid problems are not going to stand in my way of losing it.0

Like other I am a low carbs type of girl. I had a thyroidectomy as I had thyroid cancer... So I have nada in there... Make sure your taking your synthroid an hour before you eat or drink..0

Thanks !! I will check it out..:flowerforyou:0

Hi. Thanks for all this. I've had hypothyroid for almost a year now after having radioiodine treatment, since then I've not been able to loose any weight and what I had previously lost went straight back on. After reading all your posts I'm going to give low carbs ago. Thanks all : ) X0

So it seems that a low carb diet is the way to go. I was diagnosed about 10 years ago was on synthyroid never had any problems with anything until after I had my son 4 years ago. I weighed 134 before I had him ballooned up to 188 the day of delivery. I am now at 147 but struggling with almost every symptom of hypo. Tired, weight gain, losing hair, etc etc. My family doctor referred me to an endo about 2 years ago and he put me on Armour Thyroid for the past year. I work out atleast 4 to 5 days a week and just ran a half marathon. I'm just so tired of working my butt off and well my butt not getting any smaller I'm so tired of hearing my endo say well you have to work harder than the average person. I just finished the Thyroid diet book I wasn't too impressed with it actually. She gave a few good tips but nothing that I hadn't really heard or read about before. Of course in the book she did talk about low carb diet although I don't feel like I eat a lot of carbs anyway maybe I need to increase my protein. She talks alot about supplements......cinnamon....fish oil....etc etc. Anyone out there take any supplements such as cinnamon, probiotic etc that has helped them?
I struggling alot with being bloated to the point to where somedays I look like I'm 6 months pregnant.
Feel free to add me as a friend. I'm needing a lot of support right now when it comes to hypothyroidism.0 -
I've been on meds for at least 10 years. My main advice is patience. All I've done is stayed within my calorie count, for the most part, with only going way over on planned occasions like family gatherings. I've become really anal about portion size - if you don't have one, I recommend getting a food scale.
I haven't followed any particular diet, but I can say that I'm not eating as many carbs as I used to, and I find that my sodium is naturally under the recommended amount. So, I'd say check those numbers regularly.
Good luck!0 -
Seems when I eat carbs I'm gaining again even went gluten free0
-
I'm staying under or at my calorie goal for the day and work out 6 times a week. So far that's the only thing that has helped me lose anything. I do worry that if I have a cheat day or go on vacation and not work out for a few days that I'll be back where I started. I might have to look into the low carb diet, never really thought about it.0
