Burned calories?

Hi all, I'm pretty new to this and am a bit confused! Sorry if I'm being totally stupid (most likely!), but if I "earn" extra calories from excercise, should I be eating to this amount, or should I stick to the number as suggested by mfp? My reccomended calorie intake is 1510 a day, today I burned 300 calories from excercise, so should I be eating 1810 calories to lose weight successfully? I know this is basic stuff for most of you, but as I said, it's all new to me!! I'd really appreciate any advice you can give me! Many thanks! x :o)

The addition of your exercise calories *is* the number suggested by MFP. Many people eat only 50-75% back to account for inaccuracies, however, especially if not using an HRM.

You can eat those extra calories. The "Net" calories will tell you how much you have left for the day (in order to lose the weight at the rate that you want to lose). If you don't eat those calories, you will lose more weight , but you run the risk of not having enough nutrients to recover from your exercise. As a general rule, you shouldn't eat less that 1200 calories/day and you really do need the extra food after a workout.

THis is kind of related to the OP... I'm actually trying to gain weight. I'm confused about the tracking of calories lost only on cardio excercise. I run for about 20 minutes before I do my weight training. Am I to understand that Weight training doesn't burn calories ( I thought everything burned a few calories) or should I only eat to replace the calories burned by the cardio?

You definitely burn calories lifting, depending on the type and level of exertion it can be quite a lot. If you don't have a HRM, you can log it under Cardio as "Strength Traiing" if you lift heavy and really get your HR up the estimate might be a bit low, but it is a start. Good luck!

Yes, I eat back my exercise cals mostly. But not always, it depends on how hungry I am that day. I always aim to eat to my calorie goal each day, and if I exercise I try to get closer to my calorie goal, but is okay if you don`t quite make it. Like if you are short 50 to 150 calories on days that you work out I think that is okay. But you should eat back some of the calories burned to fuel your body.

    That's really helpful. Thanks!
