So now, not only an I trying to lose weight but I found out on Friday that I'm diabetic too. I'll have to take medication. I go back to the doctor next week. What am I in for? Is it going to be ten times worse trying to lose. I know all the fruits I bought last week were for nothing. Most have sugars....

The measures you take to address your diabetes can also help your weight loss.

Diabetes is a disease of carbohydrates so you'll be reducing your intake of those I hope.

Taking out the bread / breakfast cereal / pasta / pizza / candy / chocolate (apart from high % cocoa) / fruits / sweets / cake / sweets will reduce your problematic blood sugar and your calorie intake.

http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsweek/Glycemic_index_and_glycemic_load_for_100_foods.htm may be helpful, you're trying to minimise the "glycemic load" in the column on the right.

There are several Type II diabetes groups here, you may want to go there for your questions and support.

Don't give up on the fruits so fast. They are natural, not refined sugars, and a good thing for diabetics in place of the usual sweets people like to indulge in. Don't make the mistake of thinking your ability to eat a lot of the foods you love is over. Diabetes runs in my family, and while I don't have it yet, I have learned from those that can manage it well that eating certain foods in very careful moderation is ok.

Like you I have just be diagnosied with Diabetes 2. The nurse I saw on Thursday told me that if I keep up my wight loss and eat healthy there may be no need for me to take medication. Exercise is important too, though I can only do anything for 5-10 mins max. Carbohydrates are important, along with fibre (the diabetic nurse and the leaflets stated this) but keep sugar to a minimum. The fruit you have bought is OK as that is a natural sugar, though I don't eat fruit much as I do not like it. When reading all the leaflets she gave me it said that you should not eat very many grapes, just a few is OK. Upon reading all the gen she gave me it is possible to turn your Diabetes around and come off medication. Apparently if you lose 10-15% of your body weight is good so that is a good starter. Hope this helps. I started dieting and exercising when I was told that I might have Diabetes, so that has definately helped. My sugar level is 5.7, and need to go down to 4.8. Do you know what yours is? If you read on the internet about this there are many conflicting reports, so go along with what your Dr advises for you.

As much as I would prefer to not have Diabetes, when it comes right down to it, I have said getting diagnosed was the final piece to the puzzle I needed to regain control of my life... I lost my sister to complications from diabetes in 93.... She never took care of herself after diagnosed and eventually all her bad choices cost her her life. I embraced my disease and said from the beginning that it would not define me... After alot of reading and asking alot of questions, I put together a plan of action and commenced to working that plan... I can tell from my experience that my diabetes has not hinder my weightloss in the least bit... I am off all medication except for metformin but my endo dr, is very aggressive and will not take me off it because he believes it will do me better protecting what receptors I have left to prolonging any future chance of going on insulin.. Hopefully that never happens. And do not be afraid of Fruits they are definitely not the enemy. I eat oranges, banana's, strawberries, apples, etc... almost daily... And carbs to are not the enemy, I eat cereal, breads, pasta, etc.... I just eat the mutli-grain, whole wheat and avoid any white enriched flour and it doen't hurt my blood sugars. I am a firm believer that if you are a diabetic your best friend is exercise!!! Without a doubt this is right up there at the top of the list of things to do if you have diabetes. It has help regulate my blood sugars as well as the benefits of losing the weight which in turn supports the diabetes being in check... So don't think all is over and done... This is not a death sentence, for me it is a tool I use to keep myself working everyday to get myself to better health... Best of Luck....

Please dont listen to this... My daughter has been a diabetic since she was 8 years old, she is 27 now. Diabetes is a disease of the endocrine system NOT Carbohydrates. What type do you have? I'm thinking type 2. Please listen to your doctor and your dietitian. Fruits and grains are healthy for diabetics, how you eat them is very important. Loosing weight will be very helpful for your condition, but just as important is increasing your activity level. To be honest, for you, I would worry less about the loosing weight option specifically right now and just become more active and eat a better diet. Portion sizes, cutting out empty calories and exercise. I think you will find once you increase your activity level and eat a healthy diet of good carbs, fats and proteins, your weight will start to come off naturally. Work close with your doctor, you will be fine. It's scary, but nothing you cant handle. Good Luck!

I quoted this because it hits home for me in a lot of things. Thankfully I am no longer diabetic. I was able to reverse it but it doesn't mean I can go back to my old lifestyle. I can easily get it again. Besides weight loss, keeping the diabetes away is 1 of many reasons I stay active.

As the above couple of posts have said I also agree that you can turn it around. I forgot to mention that my Dr said that he would rather leave off the medication for at least 3 months to see how things go, as he thinks I can turn it around as I have made a really good start. Where it was mentioned about the carbohydrates that is not correct. I eat cereals like wheat etc, I eat granary bread, pasta, rice and all vegetables, which are all good for you with the condition. You will be fine and strive to reverse it, just like I am going to do. In some respects this was a wake up call for me. 5 years ago I had Lympoma where I had Chemotherapy and Radiology and have completely recovered, and I sailed through all of that because I was positive and didn't let it get me down, and you can do it too.

Thank you all for your help!!! This was all I needed to hear was that I can just take the right steps and reverse everything!!
