Army Ball...then first half Marathon?

Alright, so the one half marathon I REALLY want to do as my first one (its right in my community). Now I looked at my schedule...and it's the annual Army Ball the night before. Do you think it's doable? I don't plan on drinking (I'm always the DD), plan to wear comfy shoes so my feet aren't hurting and will choose my dinner wisely. I REALLY don't want to have to find another one....What do you think?

Cinderella, go to the ball! You'll be fine. Seriously, here is my tip.

I have raced for thirty years and still can't sleep the night before the race. I always fear that I'm going to forget something or oversleep. I have run half-marathons, marathons and triathlons on as little as five hours sleep. Here's how.

Make sure you get a good night's sleep the night before and do not exert too much energy the day before the race. Really, sit around and watch TV if you can. Make sure everything you need for the race is ready before you leave for the ball. If pasta, rice or potatoes are available; eat it. All the carbs will fill your glycogen stores (energy). Don't drink (alcohol dehydrates). Stay as long as you're having fun. When you start "stressing" about the time and the race, it's time to leave.

Eat a small breakfast before you leave for the race.

Good luck in the race and post your results!

I think since you're not drinking you should be fine. You will be tired, so try to get a really good night's sleep during the other nights the week before the half. Drink lots of water.

as for "carb loading" my running coach's advice to me was that it doesn't do much to carb load the night before. My running coach recommends eating extra carbs (rice, potatos, pasta) the whole week before a big race.

    Good luck!

As an Active Duty army guy..I'd say DO IT!! You got this all the way! Also I'm the same as pkfrankel, I can never seem to get an ounce of sleep the night before a race not matter how early i try to go to bed.
