Single mom, grad student looking for friends!

Hi, I'm Rachel. I'm not really new to the site - I've been on and off for years. But I want to try to be healthier now again, and MFP has helped in the past! I live in MN, I'm 30, and I'm a single mom. My son is 7, and he has ADHD and ODD, if you know what that is. Basically he isn't able and/or willing to listen to people most of the time. :) I'm also in grad school (just finished comps! Woo!) so I have found it really hard to find time to work out and plan meals while also getting work done and being a mom. But I'm going to be taking an extra year now to get the rest of my life back on track after devoting it all to school for 3 years!

I'm just looking for people to keep me motivated and to help me see that other people are doing this and succeeding! Please add me if you like. Thanks!

Feel free to add me :). I'm pretty addicted to MFP. Comps as in master's in psychology?
  • Awesome, thanks! I'm doing a doctorate in clinical psych, so after three years out of the five we take our comps.

Oh, fun (not!). I remember comps *shudders*. We had to complete comps to be granted our master's degree on the way to our doctorate. :P. Congrats on completely a major milestone!!
  • Thanks! Yeah, I'm definitely glad it's over! What's your degree in?

Feel free to add me. I'm active and a single dad, so I'm familiar with the busy lifestyle messing up nutrition. Especially when my girls get picky. :)

    Either way, good luck!

Feel free to add me too! I'm not a single mom but some days I feel like it. I work the day shift and my husband stays home with our 3YO daughter during the day and works nights.
I have a 5YO step daughter who is recently diagnosed with ADHD and my 15 YO stepson has been on ADHD meds since he was 5 or 6.
The best thing I tell myself is if I'm not taking care of myself and taking time to workout or eat healthy who will? I want to be a healthy example for my entire family!

Hi Rachel, my name is Joe. I am also a graduate student so I understand how demanding it can be at times. I would be happy to join your support group on MFP. I will send you a request.

I also know what it's like to try to balance it all. I work full-time, have a 10 year old, and just finished my M.Ed (my graduation ceremony is a week from tomorrow - whee!!). Squeezing in working out too was a challenge when there are only so many hours in the day, but I made it a priority and have stuck with it for almost a year.

Rachel I am headed back to grad school. I took a break after baby #2. Now I'm working on losing that weight too. I am a little concerned about balancing life while going back to school. I know that being healthy will make life so much easier. Feel free to add me I'm building support as well.
  • Yeah, as far as balance goes, I am taking an extra year now just so I can build some healthy habits and actually spend time away from school before going off to a busy internship. It's definitely hard to find balance, and I keep reminding myself of the quote by Jackie O., something like, "If you don't raise your kids well, I don't think anything else you do really matters." I try to keep that in mind!
