Arm & Belly exercises

Does anyone have any suggestions on exercises that can be done at home to tone up arms and belly? No matter how much I lose it seems that my stomach goes no where. Its very frustrating.

Not trying to be rude, but with 100lb. to lose you're not going to "tone up" specific body parts. Over time you will lose the fat in those areas and it will look better. Doing a mix of strength training (heavy enough to cause your muscles to adapt) and cardio will help significantly.

    What he said.

I've lost 77lbs and still have that to lose again. You can't 'tone' specific muscles anyways but when you have so much to lose you just have to lose the weight and do your lifting and know it will go eventually.

Well yes I know i have to lose first. I didnt put that out there correctly. I just wanted suggestions on exercises for to lose and tone. From speaking with other people you should do both at the same time.

Yes but there aren't any exercises that lose and tone specific areas. To lose weight from those areas you need to lose weight.

For he best exercises to lose weight you would look at weight lifting using compound moves. So squats, deadlifts and so on. Plank is another good one as it uses the whole body. If you're going to a gym look into buying either New Rules of Lifting for Women or Starting Strength. Those are great starts. Cardio is important for fitness but is not the best option for fat loss.

Invest in some exercise DVD's - I've seen great results from Jillian Michael's DVDs, P90X, Insanity, etc., but there are tons and they usually have them on sale at Walmart for very cheap. Try different things and find something you like. This will help you build muscle because you are trying moves that you don't normally do, and you're also burning fat because you're up and moving. While you're there, buy some small free weights, some of the videos will have you use them. Just keep at it and meet your calorie goal and you will see results.

Or, you could try an exercise class if you're a member of a gym. Anything to get you moving and using different muscles. It takes time, but you will feel better if you get your blood pumping. You are never wasting time if you invest it in your health.

    Best of luck.

I'd add, if you can, take a beginners yoga class and practice at home. There are lots of surprising moves that work on all of those areas as well:
Planks, triangle, downward dog, boat pose, tree pose, chair pose, upward dog, cobra, cat dose, cow pose, the list goes on and on.

You'll want to take a few classes to get some of the basics and your form down.

On me, personally, I find that my upper body shows muscle a lot faster than my lower body. But it all depends on how your weight is distributed.

    VA_Lady,

I have been turned on to the Russian Kettlebell workout. There are certified trainers with videos on YouTube, and of course there are beginner and instructional DVD's. But make sure they are RKC (Russian Kettlebell Certified) instructors! Do NOT use Jillian Michael's or any other non-RKC instruction for the kettlebell workout.

I bought the book and instructional DVD of an RKC instructor Tracey Reifkind. She lost 120 lbs. and has maintained a strong, fit figure through walking and kettlebell training. She started when she was 41 yrs old and she is 50 now and looks phenomenal.

Of course exercise is personal preference. I have discovered that I can get an all-over body workout, strength and cardio, with the kettlebell alone. This workout includes stretching and planks, and the basic kettlebell swing. All of the power comes from your hips (glutes, hamstring, quads) and the lat muscles which are the second biggest muscles in your upper body.

I have a herniated disc at L5 and have been seeing a chiro for 8 years. The KB workouts are excellent for me as they strengthen the core and loosen up the joints around my back ....my chiro even noticed how much easier my back has moved!

This is one person's outlook....and what is working for me. You can get a lot done with a KB in 30 minutes that would take hours in a basic gym. Check it out!
