Prenatal Vitamins

So, my husband and I would like to start trying for a family in the next few months. I know I need to decide on and start taking a prenatal vitamin, but I am finding this WAY more difficult than I think it should be! Two that I feel would be a good choice are Brainstrong Prenatal and New Chapter Perfect Prenatal. However, I am finding pros and cons to both.

Brainstrong has DHA, but isn't organic
New Chapter is organic but doesn't have DHA...also, it sounds like I'd be taking these at every meal. Is this normal?

I know it all depends on your body, but I wondered if anyone has any helpful feedback on these, or any other, prenatal vitamins to maybe help my search.

THANKS!

I don't have any personal experience with the two you are comparing. But my OB/GYN said that pretty much any OTC prenatal would be good. If you're interested in the organic one w/o DHA you can always take a separate DHA supplement. I also only took a prenatal once a day, not with every meal. I would speak with your gynecologist and let them know you're trying to conceive and see if they have any suggestions.

I still take an over the counter prenatal multivitamin. I didn't do much research into it, I did more research into my diet. When I became pregnant my first trimester was miserable, I couldn't eat hardly any meat so my doctor put me on a vegan multivitamin till I was able to eat meat again. I take Spring Valley and add a calcium supplement with it since it doesn't have very much in the vitamin. I only took one per day, when I asked my doctor about which ones and how often I should take a multivitamin she said any will do. She did add though that if you are going to take one, you should take it at the same time every day. I can't for the life of me remember why she said it though. Good luck on finding the right vitamin and growing your family.

The only main difference between OTC prenatals and Rx prenatals is the folic acid content...I believe OTCs are at the max level allowed of 0.8mg/dose whereas Rx prenatals have 1.0mg/dose. Not a huge difference, but if your insurance covers, why not go Rx?
  • I take Centrum Materna because my insurance will cover that for females ages 12 to 50. Since I'm not working as much as I was a few months ago, I'm cutting financial corners where I can!
Perhaps if/when pregnancy is a reality for me, I'll be more concerned about dha/organic.
What if you ask you gp or obgyn? Or, if you can find a suitable dha supplement, go with the organic one?

For me, I had to take the ones that just didn't make me nauseous. Take extra fish oil, though.
