so which is worse, the humiliation of trying something and failing in front of people you know and love and a bunch of strangers or the humiliation of giving up without trying at all?

Not trying at all. If you are around people you love then they should love you (or they shouldnt be around) enough to want you to succeed they will watch you fail without judgement and continue to encourage if. If you never try at all you will never know either way!0

The not trying at all. I was so embarrassed the first time I went running with my boyfriend. I had to stop constantly and I was just so out of shape and ugh. But he was incredibly supportive and was never anything but encouraging. In fact, working out with him makes me push myself more.0

not trying at all (unless your friends and family suck and you have no sense of humor). My family is brutal . . . we pick on each other incessently, and then we encourage each other to brush off the dirt and get back out there. Yeah, they'll be the first ones to laugh at you, so you learn how to laugh at yourself. There are parts of my life that I take way to seriously, it's nice to to have that remind to get the stick outta my *kitten*.0 -
not trying is worse. everyone fails at some things. and you have to fail a lot of times before you can get really good at anything.
You can't learn to skate without falling over, and unless you have your own private ice rink and only ever practice alone (which would be so boring and lonely!) you will fall over in front of other people. Repeatedly. And even after you're the best skater in the rink and the top scorer on the hockey team and/or winning figure skating competitions..... you will still fall over. Only this time it'll be in front of crowds of paying spectators.
When you fall you get back up again and keep on stating.0 -
Depends on what it is - skydiving for instance, I'd rather not try than fail.....
Generally, it's easier to act your way out of looking an idiot by failing. Far harder if you don't try as you're already the wallflower. And so long as you can brush it off, it's not a humiliation - not really.0 -

This is just brilliantly put!! And exactly what I needed to hear today for a bit of perspective.0
