According to industry standards, anything under 5 calories per serving can be labeled as 0 calories. Deceptive, isn't it0

Yup, you have to also remember that the nutrition info on this site is user-based. Someone probably put in the info as 5 because they knew about this industry standard and wanted to overestimate instead of underestimate the calories.0 -

If it's under 5 calories per serving they can label it as 0. I don't see what the big deal is, 5 calories per serving isn't much and isn't going to make or break your diet.0

The 5 calories is not whats appalling. What you should be worried about is the High Fructose Corn Syrup, Preservatives and Artificial colorings.0

Not sure what label you have, but Vlasic Pickle Spears are 5 cal, 0 fat, 280 mg sodium, 1 carb, 1 g sugar, and 1 g protein. If you have something that says differently, check the serving size. Since, as peoria have said, something under 5 calories can legally be labeled as 0 calories, often companies will alter serving sizes to be able to label their product as 0 calories.
One or two servings at a time this can be "okay", but be careful of consuming a lot of any 0 calorie item since the only true zero calorie consumable is water. Stuff like Splenda, diet soda, cooking spray, and other similar products are all labeled as 0 calories, but all do contain calories.
Also, there's never any reason to get mad at the database. If you have a nutrition label in front of you with nutrition info that's different than the system, just enter the food item so you have info that's accurate to the current label.0 -
I loveeee pickles but have tried to cut way down on them too much sodium for too few calories..for me.0
-
That's US labelling laws for you..... But don't worry about the cals unless you are eating a whole jar at a time. Most pickles have lots of sodium though, so if you have concerns about sodium you'll want to pay attention.0

most pickles are 5 calories a servings (serving depending on the size some for 1 some for like 3)0

If you can't spare 5 calories then... I dont know what to tell you.
5 calories over your maintenance would make you gain .001 lb.0 -

Cucumbers have calories, so why wouldn't pickles? That said, the most important reason to log pickles whether they are 0 or 5 calories is to know how much sodium you are putting into your body...0

Unless you are eating them by the jar, I wouldn't worry about it. If 5 calories breaks your diet, you have bigger issues.0

Pickles are my favorite food. That is all :drinker:0

thank you0 -
So how many jars do you eat at a time?0

For some reason the amount of angry faces in this pickle thread is making me laugh hysterically. Sleep deprivation? And also...yes they have a few calories...I wouldn't worry about it unless you are slamming down tons of pickles.0

hahaha so true!0

I noticed the same thing in a lot of threads today. People just seem really grumpy today overall. Not me I'm down another 2 lbs! woohooo0 -
I wasn't saying anything bad about the calories.. I know its just 5 stinkin calories.. I was trying to figure out if that darn Lucky supermarket was printing its own labels or something.. haha.. And ya I only have a pickle every once in awhile- because of the uber high amount of sodium.. And who the heck would eat a whole jar?? My goodness! lol0

The bigger issue than labeling foods with minimal calories as 0 calories is the labeling of high-fat foods as low-fat. I forget the exact numbers, but US regulations say that anything below a certain amount of fat per serving can be marketed as low-fat. This means all sorts of high-fat foods can be marketed as low fat because the serving size is small enough (mayonnaise, half and half, etc.).
And I could probably eat a whole jar of pickles. One of my favorite "recipes" to make myself as a child was to toast two slices of rye bread, slice up some pickles, and eat them as a sandwich with a tall, frosty glass of milk on the side.0
