Just watch Secretary with Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader for god's sake.

I've never even heard of this book until I stumbled across this thread, but can I just second this ^^^ That film was the beginning of my ridiculous thing for James Spader.

I would have fallen asleep during the Secretary, but I was on a date, and that seemed rude. To each their own.

You wont understand the hype if you dont go on to read the last two books. The next two books are about the development of the relationship between Ana and Christian. But if you didnt fall in love with their characters in the first book then dont bother to continue.
I didn't find anything redeeming about either of the characters. She was not a strong character, and the only thing he had going for him was money and looks, but her character repeatedly acted like the money didn't matter, so we were supposed to believe that she couldn't stay away from him even though she thought he was overbearing, controlling and emotionally damaged, just because he was "so hot" and his pants hung "that way" (another way over-used expression).

Anyway, I did read some Amazon reviews, so I know how it ends, but still feel like the whole thing lacked strong character connections. I know that a ton of people really loved these books, but I will never understand why this particular book series has become such a big deal (great marketing people most likely!).

Anyway, to answer the OP...I certainly wouldn't recommend buying all 3 at once. Read the first (if you must), and then decide if you want to spend the money on them. Better yet...borrow them if you can, and don't spend the money!

I've read all three books and I think they are all poorly written and just repetitive. Not to mention fairly unrealistic.

I made it 40% through the first book and gave up. If I had to read "Holy *kitten*" or "inner goddess" one more time, I was going to lose it. The writing isn't very good. The characters aren't very likeable. There HAVE to be better sex books out there.

I put the book down and picked up Game of Thrones...

A Song of Ice and Fire is probably at the top of my favorite fantasy list... the waiting between the books is so annoying!

Ditto. I'd like to go back and read from the beginning. Each book is better than the one before it! :smokin:

    Yes! Yes! Yes!
I kept reading thinking "ok. so if he didn't have money & wasn't good looking - would she still be allowing him to treat her like this"
Hell NO! because every other page, we were reminded that he is "50 shades of ****ed up"
    we-get-it.
And seriously - I couldn't - FOR.THE.LIFE.OF.ME figure out what he saw in HER either (other then she's a "sub"?)

Oh, and the pants "that way"
I have to leave this thread, cause Im getting all irritated again. HA

Not my normal read, but I am enjoying the books very much. I am normally a Twilight type reader, but heard so much I just had to read, and after the first book then I had to keep on reading to find out what happends, so far so good.

I tried to read it but it felt like a 13 year old wrote the book.

    So pretty much like twilight.

She's young, attractive, and allows herself to be controlled. Bonus points for being sexually naive, Marco Polo syndrome and all that.

I'm ashamed to admit I read it. Was the 2nd book I've ever tossed into the trash. :indifferent:

The (boring) sex scenes didn't bother me, but the repetition of phrases, expressions (holy crap!!) and her schizo "inner goddess" references drove me nuts!

One Amazon reviewer summed it up best:

    "Once upon a time...
I'm Ana. I'm clumsy and naive. I like books. I dig this guy. He couldn't possibly like me. He's rich. I wonder if he's gay? His eyes are gray. Super gray. Intensely gray. Intense AND gray. Serious and gray. Super gray. Dark and gray. [insert 100+ other ways to say "gray eyes" here]
I blush. I gasp. He touches me "down there." I gasp again. He gasps. We both gasp. I blush some more. I gasp some more. I refer to my genitals as "down there" a few more times. I blush some more. Sorry, I mean I "flush" some more. I bite my lip. He gasps a lot more. More gasping. More blushing/flushing. More lip biting. Still more gasping.
    The end."

LMAO... thanks for saving me from spending the cash on this trash!
    :drinker:
 I think I'll pass. Thanks for the reviews.

Agreed. I only got through a few chapters before I sent it packing. Horrible.

Seeing so many posts about this vapid book makes it hard for me to defend my own gender...

And now they're invading Pinterest with comments like "Is he 50?!?" on every.single.photo. Of a guy. Anywhere on the site. Makes me want to scream.

I'm on the second book. I pretty much only read it because the sex scenes are really hot, haha. It's smutty drivel, IMO, but not terrible for erotica.

    Oh jeez...are you serious?

I also find it a bit sad that so many women apparently have such boring sex lives that they're being so 'blown away' by the relatively lame scenes in this book.
