Smoking can surpress hunger, or at least make it easier to ignore it when its there. One of the reasons that people who quit smoking usually gain weight, remove the appetite surpressant and their food intake increases.

As a former smoker, I can sort of attest to what waldo is saying. For me, at least, I ate more when I quit because of the hand-to-mouth habit. Eating mimics that action WAY more than, say, just chewing gum. I don't eat much more overall now than I did when I smoked, so I'm pretty sure it didn't work as an appetite suppressant. (I once went to see a nutritionist to help me gain weight. She told me I should be trying to get at least 1700 calories; therefore, she was a little bit surprised when she looked over my week's food diary and noticed that I averaged over 2k.)

I have a friend who smoked until she got COPD, she's now in her 30's gasping for breath.

She disappeared from the gym for 1 month, after coughing until she cracked a rib.

    Don't smoke!

Put Hemp Hearts on your food, it will make you feel full.

A public health nurse told me that when you stop smoking your body needs less food because it is able to use more of what you take in. Made sense to me, I ate the same after I quit smoking as I did before, but after I quit I put on about 80 lbs.

Yea, because sacrificing your health in one way to improve another is completely rational and NOT counterproductive.

Sadly, I just added 5 pounds to my ticker after quitting. On the bright side, my stamina has improved and I feel 100 times better.

    Smoking can decrease your appetite.
It also makes you smell really bad.
And causes or contributes to about a million other health problems.
    NOT a good diet tool.

Smoking supressed my appetite but it's also killed many family members, all of them barely into their 60's. Don't do it, never start is my best advice. It's expensive, it stinks and steals life.

Seeing as I am smoke free for a little over a week now. My answer is No. I still ate and ate a lot or I wouldn't be here. For over a week now, I am just as hungry as before. Only difference now is food taste and smell better than it did before.

Lung cancer, emphysema, and the inability to exercise because you lack the lung capacity is WAY better than being fat.

    /sarcasm

Seriously OP, I hope you are not considering taking up smoking so you can lose weight. Just be patient and work hard. It's not worth it.

I'm not condoning smoking. I personally am a smoker, and I'm not looking for a lecture by admitting that... I just wouldn't recommend adding the habit as a way to curb hunger. You're better off drinking water and just eating.

However, medically speaking, nicotine speeds up the metabolism. This is part of why people who smoke tend to lose weight... I'm sure if I smoked more than I do, I'd see this effect, but I couldn't do that.
It doesn't make you want to stop eating... It can be used as a replacement, as I learned during bouts of anorexia, but it doesn't remove hunger. What it does is damper your taste buds so that foods are not as yummy as when you aren't smoking.

Smoke enough, it'll make you nauseous, you won't want to eat then :P

Oh, just as devil's advocate, not all smokers are going to see the same impact. I recently had bronchitis, and had a pulmonary function test done. While having bronchitis AND smoking off and on for over 10 years, my lungs work at 125% capacity, and the lung specialist actually told me that my smoking habit was pretty nominal. Not saying that it's a wonderful thing BUT there's a huge difference between smoking a few cigs a day, and smoking a pack or more.

Smoking CRACK WILL ALSO MAKE YOU SKINNY!!! You must be 3 to even consider this type of logic! Not only what smoking does to your HEALTH (Thought that is why one wants to lose weight) BUT also what it does to your looks! It will MESS your face and skin up!!! I have a friend who has smoked all of her life (she still has to watch her weight!), she is only 4 yrs older than Me but she looks 30 yrs. older! Frankly, I wonder sometimes how she goes outside with that face! Smoking does to the face what Meth does in a shorter period of time...BUT it is EASIER to quit Meth than it is to quit smoking once you are addicted>>>DO THE RESEARCH (says it is easier to kick a Heroin addiction than to quit smoking cigs!!)

You will be a Fat, Cancer Ladden, Smelly, UGLY woman in about 10 -15 years! ANYONE who recommends to another person to smoke cigs is like someone convincing that person to have unprotected sex with a person with AIDS. What sane person says to someone, "Smoke" EXCEPT a Hatefilled, Self Loathing Person.

I quit smoking on August 11th, and didn't gain either. In fact, I lost.

Smoking is horrible. And you shouldn't do it.

When I used to smoke I couldn't eat for awhile after a cigarette because of the taste in my mouth. The cigarette taste mixed with the food taste was awful.

I reap the benefits of smoking, without hurting my lungs by eating the tobacco. I still buy a pack every 3 days or so, but I eat the contents, rather than smoke them. I like to use the leaves in marinades and Italian dressing.

absolutely NOT. I smoked for 28 yrs, still ate, and got fat. If you dont smoke DONT start, its not worth it. I eat less now than when I was smoking.
