Just wondering has anyone had succes with video games as a means of fitness and weightloss? I know it can be helpful with getting a break from the usual workout program or gym. What has been working for some of you?

I have been doing Dance Central and Your shape. They are a nice break from just walking/lifting weights. I feel they burn about the same amount of calories

Oh okay. I've never heard of Your Shape. But Dance Central has definitely been alot of fun for me. I need to buy a HRM so I can find out how many calories I am burning

I had been using the Wii fit for stuff and now I am doing a Zumba Dvd (20 min) then Boxing on the Wii. I tell you the boxing kicks my *kitten*. My arms are usually killing me the next day and I am sweating buckets when I am done.

I am bugging DH to buy a Kinect for the xbox so I can embarrass myself playing some dance games haha. Has anyone managed a good workout with the kinect?

The kinect is addictive, probably because it doesnt feel like a workout. I was doing Dance Central for 2 hrs early one Saturday morning and was drenched in sweat. Burned a few hundred calories and buns, thighs and arms were sore the following couple days :-). Got my Xbox Kinect this Past Christmas. And I love it

I use dance games on the Wii. It's the main form of exercise I've done so far. My favourites are Michael Jackson: The Experience, Just Dance 3 and ABBA You Can Dance :)

When I first began my journey I used things like Sports Active and My Fitness Coach on the Wii.

I love Just Dance and I have used my HRM when doing it with my kids to see how many calories I burn and have gotten the same burn as when I do the elliptical (granted it was dancing for 20 minutes straight with the only breaks being to change songs)...Just Dance is far more fun to do...

It helped me build my endurance and flexibility...which led me to other things :)

If nothing else you are up and moving - that is better than sitting on the couch any day ;)

Just Dance on Wii and Dance Central were my starting exercise. With my heart rate monitor had me clocking in better with Dance Central than the gym. Go for it!

I was burning equivalent to what I do on the elliptical which is usually about 300/40 minutes...in a 20 minute session on Just dance I burned about 160...

Thats a really good burn, especially for having fun. Obviously you know what you're doing being 29lbs down and all. Thanks for the input

They're fun for a break, plus you can do them with a friend and it's fun. I have 3 of the Just Dance games and Zumba for Wii. All are good, and I can get a decent calorie burn on my HRM if I really put some effort into it.

Do you enjoy the Zumba for Wii over taking a class?

I am just starting out, but my plan is to use the Just Dance 3 game on the Wii to start with. It has a 7 day challenge you can set up and track and there are multiple difficulties. I want to do that daily for a week to get started since I have not been remotely physically active for so long I feel like I need a fun/lighter intro the first week. Then I am thinking of adding in jillian michaels' 30 day shred next week. I have kids at home and can't afford the gym so I'm hoping I can do the 30 day shred workout in the mornings and the dancing in the evenings. Today is my first day so I'll be dancing tonight :)

Good luck on your journey. I know dancing is how I started getting back in shape. My aunt had Dance Central and when I noticed my shape changing after only 1 visit to her house a week I knew I had to own an XBOX and the Dance Central game. Its a great start. You will do awesome. Just keep at it ;-)

  • I've been doing Wii Zumba Fitness 2 - It's brilliant you can burn up to 1000 calories in an hour (if you're doing the high intensity):ohwell:

Just got the new Zumba Rush (KInect) for Mother's Day. It is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! You can do individual songs or do complete workouts. Let me tell you, my heart rate is through the roof and I love it. It tracks how many calories you burn (supposedly) but I don't think it's very accurate. I just enjoy the exercise and try to estimate callories burned the best I can.

I love Zumba for the Wii! It's really a good workout. I do the mid length low intensity and it kicks my hiney. (And it says I burn around 700 calories in 40 minutes)

Dance Central 1 & 2 is a blast! I always work up a good sweat when I play. I have my favorite songs and I crank up my stereo and really get into it. When it comes to the freestyle part of the songs I usually just do a deep squat and hold it or I shadow box. It's a really good workout. I mostly use it for rainy days when I can't get to the trails.

I think I will try the Zumba fitness rush as well. I think I'm sold on it.lol
  • Pro tip: you can turn off the freestyle in Dance Central 2 if you want.
  • I just started DC2 a week ago and LOVE it!! I burn about 400-500 per hour acc to my HRM. So It seems to be a good workout.
