I really need help - asking for time off work?

So, next week I need some time off work - nothing drastic but it just means that the week beginning the 4th June I can't work until past 11am on the Monday for an orthodontist appointment, I can't work until later than half 5 on the Tuesday and I can't start until after 1pm on the Thursday. My manager knows I am going on holiday on the Friday and these appointments have been made especially for the week before my holiday as otherwise I couldn't get them until after and it would throw eerything off.

So in those cases, it's not that I'm asking for time off per say, it's just trying to work between times. I only work up around 16 hours a week in a golf club bar, but it can be less depending on the rota - so this shouldn't affect my hours really.

I also need the 6th - 8th July off completely because I've been invited to my fiances Uncle's wedding and then I need the 25th July off for my son's actual birthday and then the weekend of the 28th-29th July off for his birthday party and since it is in the house, the next day to clean.

Essentially I am only asking for 6 days off for the WHOLE summer, as any other days off will just be when I am not working.

But I have two questions, and I could really do with some help.

Firstly, my manager isn't back into work until Tuesday, yet I won't be in until the Thursday - at which point the rota may be completed for the next week and I won't be able to inform him of the times I can work. Should I pop in on Tuesday and ask for the times/days off for the whole summer I need, or would that look quite cheeky?

Secondly, does it come across as me being quite demanding about my time? Normally I wouldn't do anything like this but these appointments have been made for a few months (since before I got the job) and would be free to work whenever really

Could you ask someone to work for you during the time you need off in the meantime. If he knows your shift is covered, maybe he won't have any problems letting you take off work. :)
  • July is far enough away to request it without an issue, unless a bunch of other people have already put in for time off, than its usualy first come, first serve.
If the schedule for the june stuff is already made, you might have an issue requesting it off. Do what Tangerine said and get someone to switch shifts with you and make sure your boss is okay with it.
Maybe leave him a note, and than call to discuss it? Or go in to talk to him about it as well.

I am all for leaving a note - I'd be seriously annoyed if I did the schedule and THEN found out people wanted time off.

Having been on both sides of this situation (manager and employee) I think it would be far more professional of you to stop in and see the manager personally and discuss the scheduling issues.

It'd be a lot easier to get the time off if you had someone to fill in. Most management won't have issues with time off as long as the shift is competently covered.

The further in advance you request specific days off, the better chance you have of getting them. In your case for next week I would suggest you talk to your boss asap. If you have already been scheduled to work at those times see if there is someone who can cover those hours or switch hours with you AND make sure the boss is cool with it.

if the appointments were made before you got the job, they should probably have been brought up before you took the job. that being said, let the manager know ASAP.

It's a summer job, they hired you to be there, for the summer. If you look at it that way, 6 days off, in 3 months of working, is almost 10% of the time. (based around a m-f 9-5 type job, but a golf course is probably more like friday - sunday, so maybe even more the 10%).

anyway, talk to them asap. don't be demanding about it, and help find people to take the shifts.

First, I would definitely go in. The sooner the better, so no one can complain it is last minute!
Second, no. Just explain that you had these appointments for a while and if you cancel, it will be hard to get in again.

Stop in when the manager gets there Tuesday and talk to them. Easypeasy.

Since you're asking for time away for appointments, take the card(s) with the days and times the doctor's office gave you. That way the manager will know you're not just skipping work.
