I was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency last October. I managed to get my levels normal and am still on supplements, but I haven't noticed any difference in weight loss0
-
I can not seem to get mine under control. The dr. had me on a very high dose that I had to take once a week.0

Maybe it wasn't October. They started me out on 2000IU and in 3 months, it hadn't improved at all. They bumped me up to 5000IU daily and in 3 months, it was back to normal.
I'm not sure what your level is, but mine was 21 when they tested it0 -
I went to an endo to have my thyroid checked and he sent me to my ob-gyn to have my Vitamin D checked - it was drastically low, so I was put on 5000-10,000 IU /day. It definitely has NOT helped my weight loss, but I think its important to keep the levels up.0

Vitamin D is important to the production of testosterone, which in itself can be an aid to weight loss or a hinderance if too low. Supplementing Vitamin D keeps my energy levels higher, but I can't say that is has drastically improved my weight loss results.0

Biased because I know the guy but, he is incredibly educated on these topics and I trust him whole heartedly with giving accurate and well researched information.0 -
Low vitamin D can cause fatigue so maybe you'll have more energy and can burn more from that. Good to have you're levels checked! I'm in Michigan--winterland of no sunshine--and my Dr. checks routinely.0

I have been battling Vit D deficiency for over a year now. I don't think it has helped my weight loss but I do think it has helped my energy levels. I finally got mine up to where they were suppose to be last summer and guess what that is when I had the energy to start MFP. Good luck.0

This was on the radio last night, i didn't catch much of it , but they were discussing a trend in Vitamin D and how increasing it has helped athletes. I started taking it 3 months ago, because a friend said it does just as much as Vitamin C for preventing colds, Do't know if it is true. I also heard on Dr. Oz that Bee Pollen should help too. Haven't tried it yet ....0

I had rediculously low Vit D, i'm talking 12 outta the suggested 45 for woman my age. I was on 50k mg twice a week, then once a week, now once a month. mine are finally around 40. I dropped 11lbs. BUT for me i got much more energy when my vit D levels were up versus down, so that helped me have the energy to work out.0

Did any of you experience bone pain with it?0

I don't know about weight loss, but it can be very negative in other ways. A couple years ago, I went to my doctor for joint pain; I was afraid that my rheumatoid arthritis had come out of remission. I got a frantic call the next day when the blood tests came back; my vitamin D level was in the single digits (normal is over 30). It turned out that they had been so low for so long (I'd actually had a test showing low levels before but didn't think anything of it) that I developed osteomalacia (bone softening). My psychiatrist said it was also a major contributor to my depression.
So even if it has nothing to do with losing weight, low levels are still something to pay attention to.0 -

I had to do the super high dose for a few months as well. Now my doctor has me taking 2000IU daily. I have no idea if it helps or hinders, and this happened before I started my journey.0 -

None at all. I take D-3 also not just D... stores sell both, I would advise to get the D-3.0 -
All are very true. I was recently diagnosed with vit d deficiency. The norm range is 30-100, my value was 7. My practitioner prescribed 50,000 units of Vit D 2x week over 8 weeks. After much research, I found REAL scientific studies that directly correlated weight GAIN, decreased energy, decreaced ability to concentrate to vit D DEFICIENCY. Sooooo I have been taking my vit d for 2 1/2 weeks now, and I can tell the difference already. A lot more energy and the ability to focus better. One other thing my practiioner shared with me, the good ole natual sunlight also aides with absorption (using caution).
I hope this helps someone!0 -
I was drastically low. I take 50,000 units (yes, I typed it correctly) one time per week. It has helped my energy levels but not really weight loss.0

Have you had your levels tested? If you're still low despite supplements, you might try adding a magnesium supplement to the mix. The two sort of go together in terms of being able to absorb D.0

thanks for all the advice.0

I just got my lab work for this back last week. I'm at 19.
My Dr. wrote a prescription for D3 50,000 intl units oral capsule, once a week for ten weeks.
But I got D3 from the store, 1,000 iu capsules.
Now, stupid question. Is 50,000 the total iu for the whole prescription or per capsule? It's got to be the whole rx, right?
So should I take five of the store-bought capsules once a week? Does it make a difference if I just take one capsule once a day?0 -

Ah, this might answer my question.0 -

Dark chocolate and red wine are good for magnesium!0 -
Most people ARE low on Vitamin D... I have heard however that those seriously low have weight gain issues, thyroid probs, muscle fatigue, can get cancer(s) and other disesases, etc.
Make sure to get out into the sun for 15mins 3x per week, take supplements and make sure to consume via dairy products if possible. Being a woman I think taking a calcium plus vitamin D supplement is important.0 -

I had it tested and going to get it tested this Friday again. I might just have to try the magnesium thing.0 -

I truly need to get outside in the sunlight a lot more.0 -
Cod Liver Oil is supposed to be a really good source.....just wondering if anyone as actually braved the taste. I've been warned that it tastes horrible but i've read you only need 1 tbsp per day.0
-
I also tested low a few months ago and the Dr put me on 1000 IU tablets. I have been pretty bad about taking them though. My father is also a physician and said it is pretty common for pople living in the mid-atlantic region and farther North to have low vitamin D.
Come to think of it, I did lose about 25 lbs in about 5 months and then plateaued during the winter, but that could also be since I have less motivation to go outside and exercise when it is cold and rainy. Most likely not because vitamin d levels would go down with less sunlight time.
Cod liver oil tastes gross. Honestly there is really no point to not taking the pills unless you afraid of them. All they are is soybean oil, corn oil, and cod liver oil in a pill or gelcap. Vitamin d is cheap. I got 200 1000iu gel tabs at Safeway for about $4 on a two-for-one sale.0 -
Perhaps i'll check out the capsule form then, thanks0

Bump because I'm vitamin D deficient and have no energy and can't seem to lose.0
