Help from Seasoned Runners? (knees, etc)

Hi,
I am just starting out with running and starting to really enjoy it. I had some shin splints last week which I managed alright, but today after running only a mile or so (versus the 3-4 miles I was doing daily last week) my knees started killing me! I had to ice them and take ibuprofen, there was a shooting pain from the knee upwards into the thigh... I'd hate to stop running just as I began to enjoy it. Any advice for dealing with this kind of thing? I have older running shoes which I should probably replace, so advice on good shoes would also be helpful. Thank you all so much in advance!

Go to a specialty running store and get fitted for the proper shoe for the way you run. Start there. That should make a difference. Don't worry about brand. Just pick the ones that feel the best to you from the suggestions that they provide.0

ditto! Fitted shoes will make a world of difference, especially in your knees! Happy running!0 -
I was there. Running shoes from a specialty store are the key. The chains do not always carry the good stuff. Depending on the store, they will put you on a treadmill and watch you run, then suggests brands.0
