Shin splints

I've just started picking up the pace in my workout. I'm more known for my hiking off trail. I started recently walking with my friend at about 4 miles/hr. My calf has never fully recovered from a torn achilles. I can walk the pace without feeling winded or that I'm pushing too hard, the problem is, I get HORRIBLE shin splints. Can anyone give me advice on to prevent them? Will my body just eventually get used to the faster paces and go away?

My first thought was about your shoes. How many miles have you put on your shoes?0
