Too Much Exercise

Does anyone know what would be considered too much? I usually get in about 2 hours a day. An hour at the gym and an evening walk/jog. Since I'm in school and I only work on the weekends my week days are really open. I go to the gym in the AM and then during the middle of the day I feel the need to do something physical. Would adding another 30 minutes to an hour be over doing it or would it be okay? Any suggestions?

This is a great question! I battle the same issue myself. What do you do at the gym in the morning? Weight training?0

As long as you're fueling your body properly, I don't see what you've described as being harmful in any way.0

Honestly, as long as you are fueling your body appropriately, you should be fine. The most important thing I suggest is adding variety to your workouts both in type of exercise and intensity. If you are already lifting in the morning and walk/jog at night, try adding a cycle workout. I do this for one of my workouts and by adding sprint intervals, you can definitely get a good sweat going.0 -
2.5 hours a day isn't much.
If you were an Amish farmer, you'd be "exercising" 12 hours a day.0 -
If you are eating enough and taking rest days when your body needs them, then you are ok.0

I'd say you're fine as long as you're eating the calories back to get at or close to your daily goal. Ask your doctor to be sure, but I'd think it was fine.0

If you are enjoying the exercise then go for it. I probably couldnt do exercise for that long of a time, I would need to be running to a destination, or playing a sport to keep me interested.0

Well, when I hit the gym in the mornings I do 30 minutes elliptical, and 30 minutes of walking. Every other day at the gym I will work my arms and legs. Then at night just go walking. I'm thinking of starting to work out at the gym in the AM, walk mid afternoon, and then work out at night again. It's not that I'm becoming "Obsessed" with exercise or anything. I just really enjoy it while I am doing it! When I'm at home not doing anything I am thinking about working out and feel lazy for not doing anything. I keep a clean house so it's not like I'm not doing nothing around the house. lol0

If you are doing weight training as part of that, just make sure each muscle gets 48 hours of rest between weight workouts. Rotate muscle groups so you are doing each one (at most) every OTHER day.
If you are doing cardio, the only "overdoing" it is if you start to feel joint pain (muscle ache good, actual sharp pain or pain in joints bad) or do so much that you get bored of it and give it up. Switch out cardio workouts to engage different muscles and help prevent boredom.0 -
I average doing sometimes 3 to 4 hours a day but not all at once. With 3 kids and they activities they r pretty fit so morning 1 hour, walk on my lunch break 1 hour and then walking in the evening with the younger kids after dinner0

I only suggest adding the weight training each day, because from what I've learned, muscle burns more calories in the long run. So if you build muscle, you will burn more energy daily just by being more fit even when you're not working out. Also it sounds like you're getting serious about your fitness, and the next progression might be more lifting. The trainer has been very helpful to me, as has making friends with the people on the free weight floor.
Good luck! Keep up the good work.0
