So my guidelines are 1200 calories and 45 g of protein.
Today I hit my calorie goal but went way past the protein guideline MFP gave me ( I ate 101 g of protein).
So I wanted to know, can you really eat too much protein??

Yep! You should try to average about 1g/lb of lean body mass, or .80g/lb of body weight. If you're exercising, your body will more effectively use that protein to help maintain your lean body mass.

Yes actually. Our bodies really don't need as much protein as we think. Protein is essential for building muscle, but it is based more and the combination of the amino acids we take in. Having too much protein can damgage the liver and the kidney.

Can you tell me where you learned this? All of my research (I don't use e-magazine articles) has disproved this.

    O rly?

Also, why is it that I know quite a few guys packing away 300+ and it isn't causing them issues. If you have kidney issues, protein needs to be a little more responsibly monitored, but otherwise don't worry. And at 100g, you're not even close to something I'd be highly worried about.

All of what Cris said. And I want to mention that MFP sets the protein goal way too low on here.. Especially if you are weight training (which I encourage Everyone to include in their routine!).

This. Or if you have Phenylketonuria (PKU).. Forcing you to eat a low-protein diet.. Then obviously protein isn't good for you.

Otherwise, all people doing Atkins or South Beach would be hospitalized for renal failure. Give me a flippin' break.

Sometimes I wish people wouldn't open their mouths if they don't have researched facts..

I have heard this as well. But I believe this is the case if you eat an inordinately high amount of protein over a very extended time.

The main points this article brings up about high-protien diets being bad is:
    1. Too much protein= not getting enough nutrients and fiber
    2. Protein=high fat, cholesterol, red meats
    3. Will worsen kidney/liver problems that already exist...

So as long as you are still getting a balanced diet, eating lean meats and alternative sources of protein, I don`t see an issue.

this is true it can cause liver problems check out bodybuilding.com for more info on it.... How ever there are AA ( amino acids) that you can take! I take whey protein isolate after and some times before work outs... and also take BCAA (amino acids). How ever I talks to a nutritionist just a couple days ago, and he was talking about if your active! you should be able to eat 100% protein to your weight. so if you weight 130lbs you can have up to 130g of protein...Keeping in mind you want balance with AA's, for more info check out bodybuilding.com they have tones of supplements and information on all of them!

So yes to much can be bad, how ever you need to have a serving of protein with all meal, if you eat 5 times a day have a good source of protein.

    For the
    Protein=high fat, cholesterol, red meats

Not all protein is high fat , and cholesterol... actually I think red meat is the only one...
You can have fish and chicken, whey protein isolate. I will dig up my chart for the healthy proteins that come from veggies too! there are a lot of veggies and algae that contain more protein then chicken and fish (but fish has healthy fats).

good luck ! on your journey!
