Okay so this is me with a 3 month turn around.
In this time I completely stopped training my abs! So I have not trained them one single bit and look at the difference of them petruding from a side angle!
How you may ask?? Simple!
All I do is compound exercises. Front Squats, Back Squats, Dead lifts and so on and I have some nice progress..
Another 3.5 months of bulking before a cut and I am looking much bigger already

Completely agree - abs are a product of a healthy, fit body. You look great!
(And who likes crunches anyway? )0 -
I can't tell if serious or not , but it's different for everybody.0
-
you look great! keep up the good work.0

Nice. I've been reading for a while that compound exercises can take the place of ab training for people without special needs. I don't do a lot of compound exercises and have had back surgery (no dead lifts for me) so when I exercise I do try to do planks and the Captain's Chair at the gym.
But I think you have a nice level of development and it's good for people to know that if they're pressed for time they can skip the ab work.0 -

 actually me!! sad eh?!!!0 -

Na being serious... everyone I know has stopped training there abs. As long as you have correct technique then you wont have have any issues gaining abs...0 -
Proof you dont need to train abs!!
Tell this to a boxer and show him your abs while he laughs his *kitten* off
But besides that, good work man! Hope to be where you are myself. Just don't tell us that you don't need to work on abs because not everybody is going for just the looks0 -
Nice!
But I have to ask what is your diet like? How do you eat?
I have worked my butt off in the gym the past few years and am finally wrapping my head around the fact of so much of how I look is due to how I eat....0 -

I am actually not going for abs myself just all round body... It is going to be different for everyone I know but compund lifts are the way to go if you want to gain size0 -

As a yoga practitioner for over 40 years and a teacher of yoga for more than a decade.... thank you for dispelling the myth about "strong abs". Strong LEGS are more effective at performing "core" yoga poses than spending a lot of time trying to strengthen abs independently.0

The best abs are made in the kitchen.
A person needs to have very low body fat in order for their abs to pop. Looks like you are well on your way! :flowerforyou:0 -
HEY! I remember that body from one of the "V" threads!
P.S. I love your sleeve!0 -
Amen!! I'm a relatively new lifter (Starting Strength since Feb.) and one of my favorite side effects of the simplest program ever is great abs with no crunches or other isolation ab work! I've literally done those type exercises about 3 times over the past several months out of curiosity (leg raises, reverse incline crunches, etc...) and they are MUCH easier. Planking is much easier. Heavy squats and the like are taking care of my core just fine!!0
-
Don't spend much time in the gym yet, but what you're saying makes sense. You look buff, keep up the good work!0
-
Nice progress.
I can't stand core work - it's boring and tedious but I do sometimes train them. But I kind of think if someone is kind of "flat"- looking in their abdomen, they need to build up some ab density so the muscles really pop even at slightly higher body fat levels. I'd always thought that one had to get down to super-low percentages to even see some faint cuts/lines but not so, if your muscles underneath are developed to a nice degree.0 -
thanks i never knew you could get great abs w/o training them that is soo my problem area and the least fav part to work0
-
I have heard this too; it has more to do with diet. I had to go through back rehab and all the exercises are core/ab strengthening moves. They have helped my back feel more stable and as a buproduct I have lost inches in my waist. They aren't really difficult moves either....very isolated, pretty easy for the most part.....thanks.
PS-nice sleeve...I have full back, ribs, shorts and short sleeves. Working on blowing out my lower left leg right now. Cool...0 -
I think many of you are missing the point. He IS training his abs, just not directly. His abs are certainly bein worked through the compound lifts. I don't like working the core directly either, but I've got a strong core from running trails, swinging kettlebells, and lifting heavy compound moves in the gym.
Great job OP. Carry on.0 -

There you go...confusing everyone with logic!!0 -

I used the OP's terminology. And no, he is not specifically training his abs. I got the point.0 -

The Captain's Chair is a station in the gym; you may have thought it was a dips station because you can do dips on it. You press your back against a pad, hold onto the handles and lift your legs, bent or straight, if you have the strength, or side to side for your obliques. I read an article on a study of the 10 most effective ab exercises and I think the Captain's Chair was ranked second, after the Bicycle exercise. The CC is kind of fun and does not involve getting on the floor. I really like it -- as much as I like any ab exercise.

I can do two or three minute-long planks. I use my Gymboss timer. I don't push myself. I was told to work up to a couple of minutes and do at least a couple every day. I don't because I'm not consistent.0 -

You look great! And your tattoo is AMAZING!0

While I congratulate your success, neglecting to train/strengthen your core is rather ridiculous. Your abdomen does a lot more for your body than just sit there and look pretty.

What do you think compound lifts work?
