    "............never amount to anything.." Those word's were almost the last words I heard my father say before he died of lung CA, in 1998. I was a single parent also. I was working full time and going to school, taking my pre-req's for the Nursing program. I had to quit school to help hospice my father. Broke my back (literally) doing it.

    It took me 12 years to finish a 2 year degree, but I did it...NOT FOR ME.......for the echos of those words. "..never amount to anything". constantly present in my mind.

    I bet your daughter is so PROUD of you..mine was when I received my degree!

    Thank you for your inspirational story! It is a testament to your strength and shows it is never to late to turn things around. I really needed to read something like that today. It's amazing what we are really all capable of doing if we can turn off the negative voice in our head :o)

    Thank you everyone for the comments, tears, and for seeing me as an inspriation. I still struggle from time to time accepting that I could ever inspire anyone else, but I know that with the many obstacles that I have overcome, it is bound to happen. I shared this because I too find inspiration in other's stories and acheivements. I plan on continuing my path of learning, losing, and helping others. I have found a passion within myself to keep driving forward. Anyone who thinks you "can't", change that voice inside, because you CAN!

    Thank you so much. I am also a single mom and have been in a major rut all day thinking that I was failing as a mom to my son cuz I didn't have money to put gas in the car. I'm starting school in the fall and just feel like I'm making a bad choice by doing it cuz I will loose so much time with him. He is my world and I'm trying so hard to do the best I can for him. I'm going to classes since my degree isn't available in online courses so i won't be around for him much. Thankfully I do have a great aunt and uncle who are letting us live with them that way I will know for sure that he will be taken care of all the time.

    Anyways.. your post reminded me that I am doing the right thing. It may have taken me 7 years to get here but in the end I am doing it. And I will also grad with honors because I am smart enough to do it no matter what others in my family say.

    So once again, thank you for being such an inspiration to me and others. You go girl!

    Congratulations on your perseverance. You sound like a great mother, and with this you can be the voice of reason when she faces her own challenges in the future! Your story is definitely inspirational, and you have cemented my decision to keep pushing to lose weight to be healthy for my son. Congrats again, you are amazing!

    Your story makes me so glad that I decided to post this story!! My daughter would get upset when I didn't have time, but I found ways for us to be together while I studied...we'd do our homework together, and I'd let her "help" me by giving me her ideas. Ironically enough, she did give me quite a lot of great opinions about facts that I never would have considered before...and she just turned 12 last month. She was very proud, and was standing up cheering the loudest of anyone when I got my diploma.

    You are absolutely doing the right thing!! I am so proud of you for taking the step to register, and when you think that it is getting too hard to continue (beleive me, I had those moments), just remember that YOU are worth it, and your SON is worth it! Just imagine him cheering you on as you get your diploma...and it will give you the fuel you need to go on!!

    I agree! Elizabeth serves as an inspiration and voice of reason to me on a consistient basis. I completely love and depend upon her and all my friends!
